I use this method to determine entertainment purchases - it's how I justified spending $1000 on an Xbox and related equipment, because I'd determined $2/hour to be a good value and got an estimated 500 hours of time out of it.

By this method, clothes have a self-limiting factor, though - there's a hard limit to the total number of hours you will use shoes, so each new pair of shoes decreases the value of all of your shoes. (Unless you run all your shoes into the ground, which you probably don't if you are buying shoes on a regular basis.)

I hadn't thought of the multiplier - it could help justify really expensive pursuits like live concerts and Magic cards that would otherwise be terrible.
