1) So Olli had this idea about Gina being in the brig, bonding with Mathias and being let out during 'the passage', but also insisted Helo be dead. And I went, Nooo, how the hell do I get Athena to stay in fleet let alone talk Gina into staying. She has to date someone- and of course I'll take any excuse for more femslash. That's why Sam had to die. The guys are just dropping like flies. Yes I have the power.

2) I love playing with blasphemy. I think the most fun was having to figure out about cylon society to give them a frame of reference.

Well Lee isn't taking the relationship too well as you have imagined. I cut a lot of the Athena/Starbuck backstory from this scene, but their relationship gets more play in book 2. As does Lee being pissed. This is the relationship that I've gotten the most flack for putting in, but it really does work so well in my brain with both of them growing to control their compulsions rather than be controlled by them.

Glad you this all worked. Both Tarkas in the mess and Gina/Athena in the raptor were part of the original draft I got from Olli. This part probably had more rewrites than any other part of the story, but it was the first part that came together and let me know where everyone had been and where they were going. Getting from the banter to a fight between Gina and Athena is when I got the dynamics between Gina and Athena. Ultimately the finished story grew backward and forward from here.

Athena/Starbuck is one of the reasons this is only book one.

Yeah Gina and the rest of the sixes are shaped by experience and reaction to praise, criticism, and expectation like everyone else. And I do see them as purpose built, created to fill holes in the society. After the deaths of final five, they are part of a military machine. It keeps them in lock step, belonging and having a defined purpose is very seductive - at least until something makes them reject the expectations and assumptions of their programming.
