Today, share with us two instances in your life where things failed to add up-- whether as literal as your checkbook refusing to balance, or as metaphorical the moment when you realized s/he was cheating on you.
It was ten minutes to midnight and Nolan was staring at the ceiling of his dorm. He knew he should have tried to get a little sleep before it all started but he was too anxious. Any minute now he would start to feel the faint tingling in his fingers and toes and, maybe an hour or so later, he would begin the transformation into becoming Gifted.
He had been waiting for as long a he could remember for this night, the night when he would become a healer like his mother, his grandmother before her and his great-grandfather before that and generations even farther back until their family had begun keeping their records.
He'd spent hours imagining what his proving ceremony would be like; stepping into the hall wearing the cheerful yellow healing robes with Kerris proudly at his side as his Guardian, proudly displaying his new tattoos and beginning to let his hair grow long. He'd already started on that step in preparation. He even wondered what sort of illness he would be healing and who his mentor would be.
He let his mind wander in anticipation yet again, waiting for the deep chimes of the tower that would mark the morning of his sixteenth birthday and the start of the rest of his life.
He must have fallen asleep before the chimes because, the next thing Nolan knew, he was waking up to a bright morning and felt exactly the same as he had the day before.
He pulled a pillow over his head and laid in bed for the rest of the day, not wanting to deal with his own disappointment.
---
Six months later, Nolan was shaken roughly from sleep by a scared looking Kerris.
Nolan sat up quickly. "What's happened?" he asked, alarmed.
Kerris sank down slowly onto Nolan's bed staring at his hands for a moment before whispering, "my fingers are tingling."
The implication caused a quick flash of heat to course through Nolan making him momentarily unable to speak.
Kerris finally looked up at him, "I want you to be my Guardian."
Nolan nodded distantly. "Of course," he managed to saw, his mouth dry. He barely registered the small voice inside of him that said it was supposed to be me.
