Steve-o and I hang out almost everyday after school and just talk about random stuff, I don't ( Read more... )

I find your thoughts compelling in much the same way that your instructor's (or the Truth Club itself) compels your own thoughts to be first collected, then disseminated. Ideas and debate, spawn more of the same. Hopefully, too, good ideas and good debate, spawn even better ones to follow. The reasons as to why people search to 'rationalize' that which they feel they need (or have...as in 'faith') but can't prove unequivocally is, in part, as you said a fear of dying (at least for some). Others have a need of self worth that transcends personal esteem and goes to a level of wanting to know that humankind...as a species...is far above any other non-god creature. That we, as a people of God, are connected throughout history and throughout eternity in a way that says we are significant...even superior. It's not vanity, but rather a search for a kind of freedom that lifts a person's spirit beyond the Earthly shackles of weariness, loss, oppression, loneliness, injustice, cruelty, sickness, unfaithfulness or any other human frailty or ( ... )

First let me say that I am not an "Old Testament" guy. The "Old Testament" is where you find the God of 'justice'...who often exacted his justice by testing the people's worthiness...as you said. He is the God of the 10 Commandments and of Mortal Sin. In the New Testament, we find Jesus (The great TEACHER)..who taught in parables and when asked about the 10 Commandments said that there is one Great Commandment....LOVE. HE said "Love God with all your heart and soul and mind"..then He added "Love thy neighbor as thyself".(This teaching has become known as the 'Golden Rule' and is also described as "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"). Your arguments of intellect and 'breaking through' the limitations of religious is coined in the phrase "Religion is the opiate of the masses" (I've forgotten who is credited with saying it first). Where you see a painted background...I see a framework...kind of like the Constitution of the United States. Those who wrote that document, on which our nation's society was formed..are called ( ... )
