Lol, it's okay! I think a lot of the movies mentioned are really good (except for Avatar, which I think is probably the most overrated movie I've ever seen in my life).
I definitely recommend Akeelah and the Bee. It's one of my favorite movies, although the ending kind of disappoints me but I won't spoil it.
I found this through the link posted on ontd_f. I'd always passed Bring It On off as a typical teen movie, but you have articulated very well some things I never noticed when watching it.
Love this: "Avatar says that white people can appropriate other cultures and ultimately perform that culture better than the people who it belonged to (see also the excessive praise and worship that "King of Rock and Roll" Elvis Presley gets over the black rock artists he stole off of and how hipsters have appropriated indigenous cultures in the name of "fashion")."
I saw this link over on ontd_f. I thought this was a really interesting article.
I remember watching it when it first came out and (as a white person) just CRINGING when Torrence offered Isis the money from her dad's company. It was like "no, no, NO DON'T DO THAT....oh man she did" so I was actually really satisfied when Isis was like "um...are you kidding? gtfo." I hadn't thought about it any deeper than that until now, so thank you for putting it into some context. :)
I quoted this article and posted a link to my Tumblr because your insight is slammin'. It's at jgh2 @ tumblr if you want to check it out. Hope that's OK, I'll delete the link if it isn't!
