I remember almost getting into real fights over fighting games.
I remember being able to beat TMNT on just one quarter.
Just a couple weeks ago I got tired of the new Punisher game's scoring system, so I fired up an emulator and beat the arcade version in all its balls-to-the-wall, quarte- cruncher, beat-em-up majesty.
I remember playing Metal SLug for the first time and thinking about how much it kicked Contra's ass.
I remember playing the Black Knight 2000 pinball machine because it said "Give Me Your Money" as I walked past it.
So, you are good at Shodown II, yes? I think we shall have to play each other..
I remember the only entertainment we had when we first moved out here from Iowa was going to Villa Italia mall and playing skiball at Jollytime. My favorite thing to do was to walk in the far back of the arcade to find my beloved sit down Star Wars game. I spent so much money on that game. I had dreams about that.
It is really sad that Dave and Busters and all those big places are so expensive. I took my son there and spent well over $100 for nothing in return, except for a sugar high from a giant pixi stick that he got for 55 tickets. Although, we did break a machine. It spit out hundreds of tickets...my mom would tear a stack off, hand them to my son and make him walk away, she would take a stack for herself and I got the rest. The ENTIRE ROLL was ours. hehehehe. We actually got a few really nice Xmas presents with those tickets.
I remember the sitdown pacman game at The Pizza Place in Evergreen...
I remember our Atari... Pong... Asteroids...
I remember spending HOURS watching my brother beat games.
I also remember the arcade in the Longmont Mall where I would go play Soul Caliber to blow off steam from hating being the manager at the bookstore.... loved the store hated the managing...
First arcade memory: Aladdin's Castle, Northwoods Mall, Peoria, Illinois, probably around 1976 or so.
First video game memory: Space War, Aladdin's Castle. (later, they added a genuine Pong).
First video game to seriously piss me off and push me back to playing pinball: Space Invaders. (because I sucked at it)
First video game I actually wasted a significant amount of money feeding, and became very, very good at: Tempest (upright) followed soon after by Missile Command (table version), both at the airmen's club, Keesler AFB, Missouri.
I have a house, and I still don't have a place to put a MAME cabinet. I'm putting it off until I have an entertainment room. (ie; until the basement gets remodeled)
I think the only person who was ever good at Dragon's Lair was the guy who owned the arcade so that he could show you that it wasn't broken every time you complained that you always lost all your money on it.
And I think I'll post more on this in my own journal...
EVERYONE sucked at Dragon's Lair. Great concept, LOUSY game design. And after you figured it out and ran through the story once, it was all over - no point in ever putting another $0.50 in it again.
