I missed SketchCrawl! I just found out about it for the first time right after the previous Crawl, went "say, that sounds like a good idea! I'll have to keep an eye out for when they announce the next one!" ...and then promptly forgot to do just that. *facepalm ( Read more... )

For what its worth, I've found I do my best sketching with a blue pencil. I don't erase, I just draw and darken the lines I like.

Yeah, a lot of the time I use a separate pencil with red lead to put down any underdrawing stuff and then draw the more detailed stuff with regular pencil lead. Otherwise, because I have a tendency towards using a more heavy hand, things get messy and it's hard to keep everything clear. I've tried non-photo blue, but it's too light for my tastes, and I have a hard time seeing what I'm doing.

But recently, when I've been doing quick sketches of members of the public, I've been using a thin black marker. First because it removes the temptation to try and erase every little mistake--which means I can focus more on capturing the overall gesture/rhythm, since one (of the many) problems I have when drawing from imagination is that the result often comes out way too stiff looking. I'm working towards something that will one day look more like this or this. I also want to eventually get to the point where I can sketch directly with a brush pen without having to use any underdrawing, sort of like this and thisWhile my sketching from life is ( ... )
