There was a respectful hum filling the room; occasionally he would tune in when he felt a hand on his shoulder offering a condolence, or offering help or sharing a favorite story about Shelby. Old students and co-workers of hers, the little family shared between them, and quite a few people from McKinley who had arrived in support of Puck and the little girl they had seen grow as a bump in Quinn’s dresses. Quinn herself, had made a Skype call and sent in a check for the memorial fund that would eventually go to Beth’s college tuition. He didn’t like it, but he understood Beth had a mom and Quinn had always been awkward about her place in Beth’s life, especially since Puck had been an active part of the little girl’s life. Though in the days leading up to her death Shelby had made an effort to make both women understand that Quinn would be there if and when Beth wanted to ask her anything.
Beth was currently being distracted by her Uncle and Aunt who were showing her various YouTube videos on their phones, ignoring the disapproving looks of the older mourners. Puck and Shelby had spent the last month and a half of Shelby’s life preparing the twelve year old for what was going to happen. They also used the time to prepare some things for Beth for years down the road. They had a lot of help from Dave, who had taken over the as their go to physician, and even outside the hospital helping out with Beth, who bonded quickly with Dave’s son, Kyle.
“What is he doing here?” Rachel’s harsh whisper snapped Puck back into reality and his eyes when to the front entry way where Dave and Kyle had just arrived bearing several bags of groceries. Intrigued Noah followed Rachel, Kurt, and Dave into what would be his kitchen for now.
Rachel was tersely going through the bags, “I guess we can put the groceries around the sandwiches, casseroles, and the other already prepared meals.”
It was then the men in the room picked up why she was annoyed, apparently she saw the prepared meals as more helpful, but where eighteen year old Karofsky would have cowered with a snotty remark the twenty-eight year old doctor simply looked to the man he brought the food for, “When Erik passed away, I found putting dinner together a welcome distraction for both me and Kyle; and it made Kyle feel like he was helping. I mean appreciated all the casseroles, but unwrapping it and sticking it in the oven just gave more time to focus on what I had lost.”
“That’s a great idea.” Kurt interjected, covering Rachel’s attempt to retort. Puck didn’t begrudge her; Shelby was someone important, if undefined, to her as well. “How old is Kyle?”
“Ten, next month, he’s already been planning his own party, every time we go to a grocery story he stops at the bakery to look at the book. The cake has changed, like, six times at this point. And goes from wanting pizza to hamburgers.”
“Pizza, Papa Dave. Definitely pizza, Beth says it her favorite.” The two kids appeared in the doorway.
“Can I show Kyle my pictures from New York?”
“Yeah, go on upstairs, but don’t stay too long. There are a lot of people who want to talk to you.”
Rachel tutted her approval before going to find Finn in gathering; Dave got pulled aside by Noah’s mother leaving Kurt and Noah alone in the kitchen.
“Dave’s really grown since high school.” Kurt commented casually.
Noah gave him a look, “Kurt, not now, its not really the time.”
“What? I’m not saying anything other than he seems like a great resource for you. And now that he’s grown up, he might actually make a good friend. Plus, Kyle and Beth seem to have made fast friends.”
Noah began to retort when Jake appeared, “A couple of people are beginning to head out, I’m going to go get Beth.”
“Thanks.” Giving Kurt one last look before making his way out to the front, to resume his spot as people began to trickle out slowly, until it was a handful of people left. Kurt and Rachel made their way back to the hotel room. Puck’s family followed shortly after, then Shelby’s family who made their way to the guest bedroom, leaving Puck and Dave alone with the two kids who were trying to stay awake to watch some TV movie.
“We should probably head out soon.” Dave said, slowly moving to leave the couch.
Puck nodded, “Look, I just wanted to say thank you for everything you’ve done for us, ever since the hospital.”
“It’s nothing really; I hate to be the bear of bad news, but ts the first year that really sucks. The ‘black year of firsts’ is what my dad called it. But any way,” He quickly changed the topic of conversation, “but you have my number. So, just call if you need anything, whenever."
