Cat-shopping

I am looking to adopt a cat. I'm thinking Maine Coon type, because I like their fur (it's long but doesn't mat like a persian's does), I like their face (it's not squashed, and has those gorgeous tufts around the ear and the fabo ruff), I like their size (large) and I know that many are very dog friendly. I want a cat that will be extremely dog ( Read more... )

Try asking Ambar, she's not local, but she breeds (or bred) Maine Coon cats. So she might know some people around here.

http://www.clock.org/~ambar/cats/ (her site hasn't been updated since 2001).

Nevin Farm (MSPCA) in Methuen usually has cats, and they'll let you hang out with the kitties.

I do not know if this place has any Maine Coon cats, but baypath in Hopkinton is a great place for animals. I can bring you there once I feel better.

I think if you get a kitten of any kind, Kos will be happy. Byron is a confirmed cat hater, but he loves Purrball. I think he would be very sad if she went away. They play together, and he loves to pick on her.

He still hates every adult can in the neighborhood. Loves his Purrball. Likes to clean her like she is a dog.

Maine Coon cats do so mat up. I've had three and all three of them got/get mats periodically. Lily, my current part Maine Coon gets brushed almost daily to help prevent mats ( ... )

I hope this doesn't come off the wrong way, but trust me--the cat you think you want, and the cat you eventually end up with, are not necessarily going to be the same kind of cat; in fact, I'd bet money that they definitely won't. Take it from the woman who thought she wanted one of the older calicos that she'd heard were in the shelter, and instead ended up with a half-grown, 5 month old tortoiseshell kitten instead. (That would be Miss Jezebel, BTW, and I swear she picked ME out--it came down to her and another kitten, and while the other one ran away and hid under the cage, she just snuggled up in my arms, purred, and looked up at me as if to say "You want me, don't you?") Everyone goes into the shelter w/the idea of what they think they're looking for, but I really do think the cats themselves play a bigger role in the selection process than we realize. Also, age doesn't always matter as much as you think it will, and while kittens are adorable, they can also be hell on wheels, and Kosh might not be happy with that--talk to the ( ... )

I totally agree - let the cat/kitten pick you.

I'll put out some feelers up here for you. I know lots of places near to me, and although it's a dive for you, a side benefit is that kosh could come play with Pedro. I can't do anything before March 1st, but as I am going to be looking for a kitten myself, I can ask for you too.

We've had several cats from the MSPCA in Methuen; plenty of selection the times we've been. Good luck! (Yay cats!)
