Blast from the Past.

First, happy Midsummer, everyone! It sure has been a hectic day today, but it's been worth it.

I've been quite busy at work this past week; Finns generally buy lots of alcohol during Midsummer, so obviously the store I'm working in has a constant influx of customers. It's been neat helping customers choose fitting drinks for whatever food and event they have in mind, and I've managed to stay calm despite the rush hours after 4PM when things get really chaotic.

As it happens, I ended up meeting surprisingly many IRL and online friends from ages ago. For example, I bumped into my high school's physics teacher (KMä), history teacher (VHä) and Finnish teacher (AKu) and had a nice chat with them. VHä and AKu were hilarious as usual, joking about my summer job with clever quips (I was glad to see my history teacher hadn't lost his touch in humour quite yet). Also, KMä was a riot, too. A funny bit in our conversation detailed his study group's visit to the physics institute in Bern:

Me: So what've you been up to recently?
KMä: Nothing much, just been chilling out. I'm taking my group to Bern in the autumn.
Me: Sounds cool. Perhaps this time you'll have better luck creating that black hole? (an injoke between the two of us when we discussed the possibility of the equipment and devices in Bern creating a black hole)
KMä: Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm aiming at, actually. I hope to create a pocket-size black hole which I can smuggle out of the facility and take back home to use as a personal storage and power source. Imagine how useful that'd be.
Me: ...yeah, I can imagine. xD
KMä: I'm evil, aren't I? :P

I also met with buddies from way back in high school and university, which was neat too. Sadly we didn't have much time to talk because it was hectic at work, so we could only exchange a few pleasantries before I had to return to work. Still, I appreciated meeting them.

As if that wasn't enough, I was contacted in both AIM and Facebook from a friend from the past who I hadn't seen online in years. Needless to say this was an extremely positive surprise because she was one of my close online buddies back in 2004/5. We got up to speed with each other's lives, and I even managed to persuade her to join tGA RP, and she seems to have enjoyed RPing so far. It's been fun catching up with her and talking about the good ol' days (man I feel old). It's clear that some friendships never fade with those who have been close to you.

And speaking of tGA, my friend's activity also inspired me to post, and the plot's been moving onward in rapid pace so far. We decided to fool around a bit and make my comic relief character as her character's potential romantic interest. This development has already led to a drinking game, and we all know that mixing Scuns and booze never ends well. It's a nice change of pace to be able to write some more light-hearted stuff at tGA after all the serious twists we've had. I guess that's the effect of Scuns on people. Too bad Bleys isn't around at the moment; I'm sure he could conjure up funny scenes with batshit drunk Scuns wreaking havoc in the Alliance's army camp. I can already see it in my mind's eye (imagine if tGA was an animated series). xD

I've continued playing the Witcher 2. I'm not happy that after my most recent NVidia updates (after disabling 3Dview) and the latest W2 patch some areas of the game lag more than before. For example, I have trouble accessing the arachas-infested patch of forest in chapter 2 near the Visionary's path because it lags a lot in there. Oddly other areas in the vicinity of the camp don't lag as much; I wonder why that particular area causes such a slowdown? I sincerely hope future patches fix this NVidia/W2 stability issue because it's driving me nuts. Thankfully the game is playable most of the time in lowest settings, but I'd like to have full playability in all areas even if it means using the lowest resolutions the game has to offer.

Thankfully the gameplay, story, world, characters and quests have been fun so it doesn't feel like a chore. I'll obviously need to try this game on a better computer/laptop someday although the low graphics settings which I have don't bother me that much as long as framerate remains good. But enough about me gushing about the Witcher 2...

Yours,
Mikko
