It is snowing, the first of the year. The pure and innocent blankets of white cover the sleeping city. The ruins of his life almost seem beautiful right now. He stands on the edge of the roof, looks down, and thinks that this should stay perfect. He takes a step back in awe. He sticks his tongue out to catch a snowflake just to taste what it could be like to be clean. He closes his eyes to savor the sensation as the speck melts and flows down his throat. Today, he is cleansed. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to live.
It is snowing. He watches as white and fluffy piles start to make walls along the streets. He passes crowds of bundled bodies, and he takes note of each face. He walks by mothers dragging their playful children, men dressed in black talking on mobile phones, and couples kissing. Somewhere in the midst, he sees a face that causes his head to turn. It’s the face that he knows the best. It’s the face that belongs to the one he loves the most. Ryeowook. Jongwoon stares at the man until a white flake flies into his field of view, causing his vision to blur. He rubs away the water that fills his dark eyes. Ryeowook is already gone from sight, from touch, from him. Today, he is crying. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to move on.
It is snowing. He brushes the faux dandruff from his beautiful raven locks. His feet wipe off the slush from the streets onto a wet welcome mat. His small hands hold a cup of hot chocolate as he sits in a quiet café. He watches the man behind the counter hand out cups and take up money. His name tag reads Park Jungsu. Jongwoon takes a sip from his cup. He sees Jungsu mouth “good?” at him. As a reply, Jongwoon gives him a thumbs up and takes another drink. Jungsu smiles. Jongwoon wishes he could.
A man’s voice resonates from the back of the small room. Jungsu calls him a lot of things, but mostly, he calls him Heechul. Heechul comes out from the shadows. Jongwoon soaks in Heechul’s attitude and realizes that this man houses all the confidence Jongwoon has ever wanted. Jongwoon notices another man sitting on the other side of the café. Heechul notices this other man, too. He returns to the shadows, blushing. Jongwoon assumes that all confidence has a limit, and this must be Heechul’s. Jungsu’s laugh fills the void. The other man gets up to leave. Jongwoon notices that he leaves a piece of paper on his table. As he gets ready to leave as well, he walks by and picks up the paper. There is nothing particularly extraordinary about the scribbled on document. It is mostly inked ramblings. The thing that caught Jongwoon’s eye was the bottom of the note. It read “I love you with all my heart. Yours forever, Han Geng”. As Jongwoon hands the note to Heechul, a sense of joy fills Jongwoon. He watches as Heechul reads the letter. When Heechul smiles, Jongwoon finds himself doing the same. Today, he is happy. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to smile.
It is snowing. Wind is moving the flurries in circles. He stands outside at a bus stop, smiling in amusement. He wonders what it would be like to dance around without a care like that. His thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the bus pulling up. He climbs the steps and pays the driver. He takes a seat in the front, unsure of where he belongs. The driver is cheerful and says to call him Youngwoon. Jongwoon focuses on the stops and the bad jokes Youngwoon makes along the way. Jongwoon just smiles as he wonders how being happy can make someone else happy. He wishes he could find a way to thank this man named Youngwoon enough.
New faces board the bus, and Jongwoon knows that Youngwoon has new people to cheer up. He bids goodbye to the driver and heads further down the aisle of seats. He finds one across from a man reading. The book is thick and written in black and red. The man looks up and notices that Jongwoon is staring at him. The man closes his book and reaches out a hand to Jongwoon. After a handshake and words of wisdom, the man hands Jongwoon his book. He says, “You seem lost. I hope this helps.” Jongwoon looks down at the Bible in his hands that says it belongs to a Choi Siwon. Before he can thank him, Siwon walks down the aisle and gets off the bus.
Behind him, Jongwoon sees two men that look like tourists. They mumble things and look down at a map. Youngwoon calls out names of places, and the tourists again look at the map. Jongwoon scoots closer the edge of his seat and mutters locations to the two men. Jongwoon looks at their map and notices that it is upside-down. The pair giggle and thank him for his help. They talk about how they’re not sure where they’re going or what they’re going to do. Jongwoon understands. They talk for hours, and he invites them to eat with him tonight. They accept. As Henry Lau and Zhou Mi walk towards the front of the bus with directions to the hotel in hand, they wave. Jongwoon feels his arms returning the sentiment. Today, he is found. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to enjoy himself.
It is snowing. The golden sun is no match for the brightness of white in early morning hours. He closes his eyes for a moment. All of a sudden, he feels something cold and wet slam against his face. He opens his eyes and sees two guys running towards him screaming apologies. He just smiles and waves. The males wave back. Jongwoon reaches down and packs a retaliation snowball. He hits his target, the shorter dude with brown hair and a dead-fish gaze. The guy’s companion laughs and gets pelted for it. Jongwoon knows that this is war, and he doesn’t mind playing until his fingers are too numb to fight back. He isn’t sure when names were exchanged or when invitations to lunch were spoken. All he knows is that he is having fun with a monkey and a fish, two guys that go by the name of Hyukjae and Donghae. Today, he is with friends. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start something new.
It is snowing. He finds himself walking home in the darkest hours of the night. He hears the sound of music and feels the thumping vibrations of a bass line. Then he hears what sounds like a rap battle. He ventures closer to the center of the excitement his body is feeling. There he sees throngs of people gathered nodding their heads up and down, basking in the presence of a boy with a baby face. Jongwoon thinks that he is cute until the boy opens his mouth. The boy’s tongue pushes out words almost too fast for comprehension in a voice that greatly contrasts his cute image. Jongwoon is in awe. When his part is done, the crowd screams out what Jongwoon assumes to be the boy’s name. They keep calling Kibum.
Jongwoon watches the response. It comes from a man that the announcer calls Shin Donghee. Donghee is a bigger guy with an even bigger personality. His rapping style consists of various hilarious voices and strange dance moves. Jongwoon has a hard time keeping his eyes off of the jolly fellow. That is until a green flyer finds its way into his tiny hands. It describes a talent contest that features both Kibum and Donghee. Jongwoon looks down at the date of the event and makes a mental note. Nothing will keep him away from this.
The announcer calls out the name Lee Sungmin. Jongwoon looks around for this person. A guy dressed in pink with a stack of flyers in his arms makes his way through the crowd. The announcer says Sungmin organized the performance and will be performing himself. Coaxed into giving a taste of his show, the bunny-like guy starts singing and dancing around. The audience goes crazy, as does Jongwoon. The dude looks embarrassed and thanks the gathered people. Jongwoon will definitely be attending this show. Today, he is impressed. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to come alive.
It is snowing. He excitedly gets ready for the performance at the quiet little café. He gets there early and orders a hot chocolate from Jungsu. Jungsu smiles. So does Jongwoon. He notices that Heechul is talking to the guy named Han Geng at a table close to the stage. The pair smile at each other, and Jongwoon wonders if he will ever feel that way again. He hasn’t since Ryeowook. He wonders if Ryeowook has felt that way since.
He calls his friend Hyukjae from inside the building. He tells his monkey friend about the show and that he and Donghae should try to make it. Hyukjae says that he will be there, and if he has to, he will drag Donghae there. The phone call ends with Jongwoon chuckling. He sips his hot chocolate slowly, avoiding burning his tongue as he waits for his friends. The acts slowly make their way to their destination. Jongwoon wonders what if feels like to belong in the mix. Then he hears familiar voices behind him. He turns and waves at his two favorite foreigners.
By the time Hyukjae and Donghae arrive at the café, Jongwoon’s table is full. He glances around his table and admires each face. Youngwoon and Jungsu pull their chairs in between Heechul and Han Geng’s table and Jongwoon’s. Zhou Mi and Henry sit across from Jongwoon and Siwon.
The lights dim and applause ensues. Sungmin introduces the first act. He says that it’s a young man by the name of Cho Kyuhyun. Jongwoon sees the boy and is instantly wide-eyed. Kyuhyun sings out a few notes. His low voice hums right through Jongwoon’s heart. He locks his gaze with the singer’s. Jongwoon feels his pulse racing. Today, he is falling like the snow. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to thank Ryeowook for breaking his heart.
It is snowing, the first of the year. The pure and innocent blankets of white cover the sleeping city. The ruins of his life are almost healed. He sits on the edge of his bed, looks down, and thinks that this should stay perfect. He takes a step back in awe. He sticks his tongue out to taste the lips of the handsome sleeping man beside him. Kyuhyun rolls over and murmurs something that sounds like “I love you”. He closes his eyes to savor the sensation as the sound melts and flows to his soul. Today, he is whole. Today, Kim Jongwoon will start to begin today all over again.
