Switchback

I had an amazing knack for mathematics as a child. My mum loves to tell stories about how my favourite place in all the world was Bruning's Clock Shop right next to K-Mart, about a mile or so away from our home. Now out of business, sadly, I would long to go in there and for half an hour watch all of the cuckoo clocks display their fancy routines ( Read more... )

I know that it isn't the point of the post, but all the mathiness at the beginning got me starry-eyed. I used to have a head for nothing but numbers when I was a kid, and I remember being excited to learn fractions. I miss the days when I was good at math; I think I would love nothing more in this world than to reclaim that. I blame calculus, and I'm angry at myself for letting something so basic -- at least, relatively basic -- trip me up so terribly.

Anyway, sorry about the setback, and I hope you can recover from it soon. Good luck! ^_^

I don't think you are going backwards if you are constantly learning from your mistakes and the variables we have no control over. Also, the path is not always easy nor should it really need be. I love to go hiking and I've encountered countless switchbacks. Sure, it is possible to forego the switchbacks and climb directly up the mountain but doing so would require more physical effort than I have (thus leaving me to fall and break my neck and be devoured by forest rabbits), I'd trample over fragile forest growth, and even if I could do that without consequence I'd miss so much of the scenery.

Yeah. I know they're not necessarily a bad thing; I know that they serve a very good purpose in life. I'm just ridiculously and stubbornly impatient sometimes, and so it's frustrating in the short term when I don't see a straight line from Point A to Point B and have to take this circuitous route in order to reach my destination... even when I know it's the only way, even when I know it's really the best way.

Speaking of taking steps back, returning here sure brings back a flood of memories. I've always loved this blog. You've always had a way with words that just make my day. Though, come to think of it, for me this is less a step back and more like looking back. Ah, but it's still nice being here again.

Also, speaking of looking back, there's something very interesting in this: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-04-03/viz-to-publish-legend-of-zelda-manga-in-october

Now that... brings back a lot of wonderful memories. I still have the scanlations from way back when. Good times.
