Came over from the thread in news. Interesting ideas -- some verging on the web of trust approach taken by PGP. My question is cost/benefit ( ... )

There are some simple rules being used... As far as one vote per e-mail, e-mail addresses are free and incredibly easy to get several of. Doing it by IP is an issue when people share computers or a network, if computers are not set to acquire their own ( ... )

These are some great thoughts to post on - and having been a programmer and having worked with many databases for years, it is true that it is possible to weed out socks with so many methods, especially given the data that resides on the servers. I believe LJ uses MySQL, actually, but there is a lot of user information, and yes, there could be (perhaps not easily but not too terribly difficult if I can do it even on my own servers - less users) code inserted to help with such issues ( ... )

Thanks. I did notice your @tmail, so by "Hiptop" you must mean T-Mobile® Sidekick™, right?

Yesh~

Actually, I have both a Sidekick and a G1, but the battery on the G1 is... not good. So it is also mercynre@gmail if you wish... I'm going to have to figure out which hiptop to stick with but I CANNOT live with a battery life of 1.5 hours with barely any use when I have team members to communicate with constantly and unceasingly.

Oh, and I meant to say, this is not an RP journal, but yes, I used to belong to some of those communities (I have dropped roleplaying as a hobby outside of WoW) and so many of them are just about the same as a real journal, because roleplayers post constantly. This one is flocked due to content, not roleplaying, but I have owned several RP journal, deleted several, am backing up the few interesting posts from others to delete, and with gifts and other items, it's hard to know it isn't the same person who has a normal journal ( ... )

The use of LJ for roleplaying and for selling are actually some of the off-label adaptations that I cherish, and I think LJ should appreciate and nourish.

I've only used LJ once for buying. A search/listings would be better but then who knows what kind of activity that'll "drag inside". I wonder right now if LJ could have been a major competitor to craigs had it been in the right place at that time, and launched a commerce feature.

Even now though, without any mods or changes, the selling comms are one part of the loyal residual userbase. Like a department store or electronics store "anchors" a mall, the fandom/RP and selling users play a major role in keeping LJ afloat.

I first started on LiveJournal as a roleplayer... and designing and working with html and css, creating mood sets, an entire journal for a character helped me progress a great deal in one of my mangas that I am looking to publish, as well as honed my designing skills. As much as people cringe at the word fandom... it can be useful. Unfortunately, work eats my time now. I have a tablet computer at which I spend 18+ hours a day drawing until my hand cramps up, because I am the head of an artist and writing site that publishes artbooks. However, in a way, the roleplaying continues when we are working on fanfiction or script, since I work in a round robin sort of way, listed as doujinshika, not writer. Designer, ownder, and artist is my main title, but I still write. It's too bad fandom got a bad name ( ... )
