Let's Play: Paper Mario! part three

Aug 01, 2007 17:41

This is going to be a bit of a strange update; you'll see why in a moment.

Last we saw of Mario, he had just finished retrieving Goompa's hammer,
defeating a shellclad troopa kid, and getting back to Goomba Village.
What new thrills and foes shall our plucky plumber pal face in this
update?

After taking a rest, a refreshed Mario, along with his trusty sidekick/
fanboy Goombario, leave the tiny Goomba Village and begin the trek back
to Toad Town...

Along the way, they see some helpful road signs, including this one:

The sign turned out to be more than it seemed; the picture of the Goomba
came alive and attacked them!
A little further on, and they spied a pink question block. Punching it
produced a strange object:

A Close Call badge, which Mario promptly equipped.

This sign provided both an encourage to eat mushrooms (from the Fungus
Advisory Board) and one of said delicious, nutritious mushrooms. A
similar sign later on the path turned out to be a trap, with a Goomba
masquerading as a mushroom.

The forest passes quickly enough, with few incidents, until...

It's a direct order from the Goomba King. That's right!
I'm sorry, but the only way by is through the Goomba Bros. That's me, Red
Goomba, and my brother, Blue Goomba.
Let's get him, Blue Goomba!
Blue Goomba: Oh yeah! Let's do it, my red brother!
A two-on-two boss fight!
Let's see what Goombario has to say about our foes...

As you heard in his little speech, he's one of the Goomba King's men.
He doesn't look that healthy. He's weaker than his brother.

The Goomba King ordered him to try to stop you.
You can take this guy, no prob. He just has a little more HP than an
ordinary Goomba.
Thus enlightened, Mario remembers the fire flower he picked up earlier,
and pulls it out.

It showers the Goombros with fireballs, knocking the blue one out and
leaving the red one close to the limit of its stamina. Finishing him off
is no trouble.

So saying, they bounce off and depart to who knows where.

It looks as if our next challenge is just ahead!

EXT. CASTLE. EVENING.
The camera flies around the small tower, stopping just as two downtrodden
Goombas enter from OS.

(Here's where it gets weird. You see, FRAPS, which I had been using to
take screencaps up to this point, suddenly stopped taking them, so I had
to choose another program. Also, the tremendous amount of flicker
encountered at roughly this point drove me to change to a different
video plugin, which eliminated the flicker and made some of the special
effects work properly.
Sorry for the interruption, and now back to the game.)

Blue Goomba: Mario beat us up!
The doors open, and they enter, the doors closing again just in time for
Mario and Goombario to arrive.

I'm pretty sure there used to be a bridge on the other side. I wonder
what happened to it.
From within the castle come the sounds of heavy footsteps, accompanied by
the ground shaking slightly. Soon, the pair of Goombas return,
accompanied by an enormous Goomba wearing striped pants, a crown and a
mustache.

The King's dialogue does this neat waving motion, which makes me picture
him sounding like Ed Wynn.
Unfortunately, this is as far as you'll ever get.
Because I, the great and powerful King Goomba, will see to it that you
advance no farther!
Red Goomba: You hear that, Mario! No farther! Not one step! Are
you scared, little man?
Blue Goomba: Bah ha ha!!!
Yeah, you're scared all right. You wanna say you're sorry?
Goombario: Wow... That King Goomba is... really huge!
I'm sure he's no match for you, though, Mario!
Let's get him!
King Goomba: Ready to meet my wrath, Mario? You'd better be!!
The trio leaps down from the parapet and challenges Mario to a battle!

Red Goomba: Beat him up, King Goomba!!
Blue Goomba: We've got your back!
King Goomba: Leave him to me!
Goombario: Hey Mario!
I think maybe we ought to take out the Goomba Bros. first, don't you
think?
They must be pretty weak since we just finished beating them up back
there.

Mario ponders the situation for a moment. Certainly, attacking the King
directly seems like a good idea...

But the flowers hanging from the tree look heavy, and seem just about to drop... Mario gives the tree a strong thwack with his hammer...

The flower drops onto the King's head, bouncing off and knocking out his
lackeys in one shot.
The odds evened out, Goombario tells Mario a little about the King:

He's the boss of Red Goomba and Blue Goomba.
Who cares if he's strong? You're much stronger.
Gee, I wonder what he ate to become so big. I'd like to be a bit bigger,
too.
After a brief yet intense battle, Mario vanquishes his overgrown fungoid
foe.

The Goombas retreat into the castle, humiliated.
Goombario: Yeah! I knew we could do it! Cooool!! Victory!!
I think there was a bridge between Toad Town and Goomba Village.
Mario walks up to the door of the castle and hears a conversation between
the Goombas:
King Goomba: You've hid that switch well, right?
Red Goomba: Of course, King Goomba!
I hid it in the grass outside the fortress.
King Goomba: Outside the... You idiot!
You didn't hide it in here? Mario will find it for sure!
Wasting no time, Mario searches the bushes outside the fortress, and soon
enough...

He hits the switch with his hammer, just as the King Goomba returns to
the parapet.

If you happen to find a strange switch somewhere, you should
definitely not press it.
It's dangerous. Understand?
......You what?
You already pressed it?!

The King disappears into the fortress just seconds before it starts to
come apart.

The outer layer of the tower falls away, revealing a stack of large
stones, which unfold, sending the King flying over the horizon.

Mario crosses the bridge and continues towards Toad Town. Little does he
know that he is being watched...

And there you go!
Will Mario make it to Toad Town?
Will the Goomba King return?
How does Kammy Koopa get her hair like that?
Perhaps one or more of these questions will be answered in tomorrow's
update! Stay tuned!

I like Mario's little hat-tip at the end of battles, so I figured I'd share it with my readers.
