Let's Play: Paper Mario! part ten

Aug 13, 2007 15:13

Wow, already up to #10!

Having completed Koopa Koot's fetch quests (for now), Mario returns to the
train station.

Well, since that stone seems to have no intention of moving itself...

Blowing things up is fun and safe! :D
Immediately, the Toads shower Mario with praise:

It really wasn't a whole lot of fun watching it just sit there.

All aboard!!
This train is bound for
Mt. Rugged.
Mario hops aboard...

And sets off!

And so, we begin:

Mystery... All my life has been a mystery... You and I were never meant to
be...

After a pleasant journey (Which involves neither magazines, nor tuna melt
sandwiches, nor derailings), the train comes to a stop in the shadow of a
barren mountain.

Passengers heading for Dry Dry Desert or Dry Dry Outpost, should
proceed directly over Mt. Rugged from this station.

Mario talks to the few people hanging around the station and learns of
the existence of a creature called a "Whacka" (No relation to Wakka),
then begins the long ascent of Mt. Rugged, when suddenly a voice rings
out in the distance:

I was looking for something and no watching where I was going.
What now?
Aren't you Mario?
Why, you are! You're THE Mario! Hello there!
The name's Parakarry. I deliver letters.
Um...
I'm normally a letter-perfect postman, but I'm having a bit of trouble
with a lost letter.
Wouldn't you know it--I dropped it on Mt. Rugged and now I can't find
it...
If you happen to stumble upon a letter anywhere around here, please tell
me, all right? My job could depend on it!
I'll be searching this thoroughly for a while...
Goombario: He's Parakarry, a Paratroopa who delivers letters.
He's got some problems.
You think?
It must be nice to have wings. He can fly anywhere.
All postmen should have wings.
You know, some people say that if you help someone in touble, good things
will happen to you. You know, karma.
What? You've never heard that?

Mario goes forward in search of the lost letters, and soon comes across
an ancient menace from deep in the ground...

...Okay, so it's just a mole.
Ugh. They have kind of scary looking faces.
They're pretty weak, though.
Maybe they wear sunglasses because they have really sensitive eyes.
Or maybe they're just hip.

Hey, it's a Diglett! :D
The sunshine! The fresh air! So refreshing, whack-a-do!
Goombario: He's a Whacka.
When you hit Whackas, they get Bumps that fall off.
I heard that they're yummy.
You know, I'm not normally into hitting Whackas, but once I heard of their
tasty Bumps... I got the urge to whack 'em!
"So I called my buddy Fat Tony and arranged for it..."
Mario goes John Henry on the Whacka, and...

Ignoring the creature's pitiful cries, Mario collects the Bump and moves
on.

I think we've found our letter!

Hooray!

Uh... Actually...
I'm also looking for two other letters I may have lost.
It wasn't my fault, really! If you find them, could you...?
Thank you so much.

Moving along...

Mario sees a completley harmless, ordinary stone in the path.

--Oh crap, it's a... a...

AN ORIGINAL ENEMY? IN PAPER MARIO?!
Their specialty is pretending to be rocks, so watch your step on the
mountain.
You'll get hurt if you jump on the spikes on their heads.
You know, there's courage in running away sometimes...
Bah, nonsense! That's nothing that a Charged hammer attack and a
cheerfully suicidal Bob-omb can't handle!

Another letter!

Thanks so much! Really!
Of course, there's still one more letter left...
If at all possible, could you please find it, too?
I'm really scouring this area down here, but so far I haven't had much
luck...

Too bad Mario can't fly. Where's your leaves and carrots and capes now?

Yay!

Now I've got all the letters I've lost...today.
Oh, thank you so much!
You're a lifesaver!
I wish there were some way I could repay you for your help.
Actually... To be honest...
I haven't just lost letters on Mt. Rugged...
I may have sort of dropped some all over the Mushroom Kingdom while I was
flying.
Heh heh... Yeah. You know, you're good at finding letters.
Do you think you could keep an eye out during your travels?
In return, I would offer you whatever help I can.
Mario, of course, agrees.
Oh, praise the Stars!
I wasn't looking forward to having to find those letters all by myself, no
sir.
I'll do my very best to help! You shall not regret this!

Let's deliver those letters! It's not like there's any sort of urgency to
Mario's mandate or anything.

The name's Parakarry.
I deliver letters.
I believe I have one for you. Hang on a moment.
He pulls the appropriate letter from his satchel and hands it over to the
walking mustache.
Another letter, duly delivered. A postman's job is never done.
Merlon: Hm? Who's it from?
Hmmmmm...
Oh, my granddaughter, Merlee! She recently entered the family business.
Umph... Is that so?
Oh, I see. Interesting...
She opened up her business at Dry Dry Outpost, deep in the desert.
It's located somewhere quiet off the main drag.
She seems to be keeping busy. That's good to hear.
Thanks so much for bringing this letter.
I'll give you this.

Woohoo! I knew there was a reason I was doing this!

The next letter's going to Goompapa, so...

Fishing is one of my hobbies, and this is from a friend who's planning
a fishing trip.
I can't wait...
...Oh...
Sorry to pile work on you, but could I give you a letter?
If it's at all possible for you, could you deliver this to a Toad named
Muss T.? He hangs around the castle garden.
I'd really appreciate it.

Oh, it's from Mr. Goompapa. That old codger!
We think alike, he and I.
It's been ages I saw him. Too long, indeed!
This reminds me... I was just thinking about sending a letter to one of my
other friends.
Your timing is perfect.
This letter is to my friend.
His name is Koover, and he lives in Koopa Village. I'd like you to deliver
this to him.
I'll bet he's near the entrance to the village.
He usually hangs out in front of the Toad House that's right on the edge
of the edge of town.
No big rush, but it would be nice if he got it soon.

Oh, would you look at this! It's a letter from Muss T.! The two of us are
always thinking along the same lines.
He's one of my fishing pals. I'll tell you, if you don't fish, you
should! What a hobby!
And to think, I was just about to send letters to all my fishing buddies
about a trip!
Once we have a good place set up, I'll write a letter back to Muss T.
So...
...could you send this along for me?
Thanks so much.
It' to a friend of mine who's always fishing at the Toad Town port. He's
easy to find.
Thanks again!

Fishing at the port? Hmm.

This must be him. Hopefully he's not too busy appearing to balance a Toad
on his head-dongle to accept a letter.

Fishmael: Hm? What's this, then?
Shiver me timbers!
Word from Koover!
Muss T. said he wrote a letter, too.
Everyone's got the fishin' bug!
Time fer a fishin' trip!
Ye should come along, Mario.
Yar, that reminds me...
I got a favor ter ask.
Could yer deliver this to 'im?
'im? Why, the Koopa Troopa who asked you ter bring this letter to me!
Koover's the name.
Yar, and take good care, fer the luvva fishes!

Thanks for the speedy delivery. Now I can send letters to the whole
gang.
Just call me Mario McFeely!
It'll be great meeting up with all the guys and fishing up a storm.
I've already written one.
Here, can you take it?
It's to Mr. E, who lives in the desert.
And there's our title, ladies and gents!
He'll most likely be hanging out in front of the Toad House. He wears a
blue turban.
You'll probably notice him right off the bat.
Thanks for everything!

Mario, having delivered as many letters as he can for now, returns to the
desert and the getting on with it. With 'Karry's aid, he discovers
another Bub-ulb.

I don't see anyone else here...
All right! You are talking to me!
You're no DeNiro, my friend.
It's been a long while since I first came here from my home in Flower
Fields,
but you're still the very ferst person to speak a word to me.
Nobody ever notices me.
The few people I actually see just think I'm blooming.
I love a good conversation! Here, take this as thanks! This is a Precious
Seed.
Keep it well and remember me.

Please grow my Seed with care.
It'll help you one day...

They return to the slightly-too-big-to-jump gap from earlier, and
Parakarry carries Mario across.

Uh oh, a buzzard... Those are never a good sign...

She takes off and hovers just in front of Mario.

Buzzard: Yep, verrrry similar!
You look a lot like this feller Mario who's on Bowser's wanted poster...

Given the choice, Mario says his name is Scholtenheim Reinbach LXIV--err,
Peach.
Buzzard: What's that?!
Princess Peach!?
You take me fer a fool?
Princess Peach is cpatured up there in Bowser's castle!
You reckon I don't know that?
Yer askin' fer it, you big fibber!
I'm thinkin' yer Mario!
Prepare fer yer whuppin'!

If you get caught in the clutches of his sharp claws, you'll lose 4 HP!
Try to wriggle out of his grip.
His special attack is flapping his wings to create wind.
This attack damages your party members, too.
But he was hatching eggs, wasn't he? Is it possible that he's really a
she?
I wonder...
It's a very intense battle, but, with the aid of a Shooting Star and
Parakarry's Shell Shot, Mario trounces the filthy scavenger.

Buzzar falls down into the canyon, and Mario continues on his journey...

That update would've been maybe a third as long if it weren't for having
to run around delivering mail. Ah well, I want to get everything I can,
so.
