Let's Play: Paper Mario! part nineteen

Sep 08, 2007 16:02

When we left Mario, he'd just brought mass transit back to the distant
land of Shy Guy's Toybox.

Mario jumps back into the toybox, and the people (all two of them)
rejoice at his kindness.

This train just dropped out of the sky and onto the tracks! Public
transit's up and running!
You can use the switches in front of the station to choose the train's
direction.
Just let me know when you've decided which direction you want to go, OK?
All aboard!!
But when Mario hits the red switch, he discovers that the train can't go
that way due to the track being damaged.
Do you see that lever way behind us on the left? If you can get over
there and push it, we'll be able to continue.
Since he can't, Mario hits the other switch and hops aboard what I'm going
to call the Toadstool Trolley.

Upon his arrival at the pink station, Mario learns that the way to the
green station is also damaged, and that a similar lever will eliminate
the problem. He shrugs and goes to see what else he can do here.

Yay, we've got our letters back!

Ooh, I just bet that he stole it from some innocent soul!
And you know he doesn't really want to cook anything with it.
Shy Guys are so obnoxious...

But, as Mario heads off in search of the captured cookware...

That fiend!

Mario finds himself in a maze of springs, glass and revolving doors, and
menaced by, of all things, paramedics:

They have the power to heal their wounded companions. Of course, they
also attack.
We'd better hurry up and take them out of the mix. It's a pain if they
keep fixing all the damage we do.
After vanquishing them, he finds another of the stolen items:

Before returning to Toad Town, Mario talks to the pink Toad again.

Judging by his size, I'd say he's not all that particular.
He has a serious sweet tooth. I hear that he really loves cake.
Well, who do we know who can whip up a cake?

You saved it from the Shy Guys! Thank you so much, Mario!<3
For that, I'm going to make you something extra-special!<3

This is my most delicious cake.
One taste of it won my late darling's heart...<3
I swore I would never make it again, but you're very special, Mario.<3
Are... are you trying to seduce me, miss Tayce T.?
Just one bite will make anybody go ga-ga!<3

And since he's in the area, Mario decides to return the mailbag as well.

"Come rain or sleet or snow or Shy Guys..." We're supposed to deliver
no matter what! Whatever can we do?
Oh, that's it, that's it!
The bag! Thank you, Mario! You'll never know how many people will be happy
to get mail.
Let me give you a small thank-you gift.
He gives Mario a Star Piece, then shows him two new letters.
First, from Goompa to Goombario:
Dear Goombario,
How goes the adventure with Mario? Is it fun?
Are you being a brave Goomba?
Remember to relish your time out in the wide world.
Grow wise from your travels.
I wish to the Stars that your adventure will prove to be a fruitful one.
If you can, drop in on us old folks now and again.
Gooma misses you terribly.
I'm looking forward to seeing you as a grown-up.
--Goompa.
Next, from the Boos to Bow:
Dear Lady Bow,
Thank you for rescuing us from that horrible Tubba Blubba up on Gusty
Gulch.
We'd never dreamed we'd meet a Boo of your stature!
The sight of you alone would have been enough to keep us going, but you
went ahead and defeated Tubba Blubba too!
We thought that our friends were done for when they were eaten, but
they've all returned.
Many thanks! When you're done with your quest, we're throwing you a party.
Please come!
Oh! And please say "Hi" to everyone at Boo's Mansion!
--Boos in Gusty Gulch

With that accomplished, it's back into the box for Mario.

They change their weapons each time they're attacked.
You'd best try to avoid their hammer attack! Every time you're hit by it,
you'll lose one of your commands!
These guys are a real pain in the ass, especially if you run into a group
of them.

Soon, Mario sees an exceptionally large Shy Guy sitting on the train
tracks.

I don't know why. I'm just an ordinary, food-loving Shy Guy.
Sigh...
I'm hungry...
Being a charitable plumber, Mario gives him the cake. The Shy Guy eats it,
and immediately starts tripping.

He zooms off into the sky, leaving behind a book.

Mario crosses the tracks, and runs into more trouble right away:

They're tough opponents, mainly because their attack power is so high.
Any attacks that involve water or snow are our best bet because...well...
you know.

Hooray, the switch! Mario pulls the lever, and...

The damaged section of track flips over, allowing the train to continue
onward.

How're we supposed to move?
Oh, by the way, a Shy Guy with a book ran off to the right toward the Slot
Machine.
I'm sure the little rogue stole that book from someone.
It'll be impossible to catch him unless you figure out how to get through
the wire fence.

And at the same time...

How the hell do we defeat that?!
Mario soon finds himself in a place full of moving floors and wire fences.

Temporarily stymied, Mario returns to Tayce T. and gives her the cookbook,
with the result that the chef can now combine food to create more useful
items. Huwei. He also decides to finish up the chore Koopa Koot sent him
on:

Oh... Oh, this is heavenly!
I'm nutty for this cake!
Koot gives Mario a coin and sends him on his way again.

After some experimenting, Mario discovers that Bow's invisibility power
has the side-effect of making him intangible and thus able to pass
through the fence.

See that Shy Guy with the paper over his head? Yep, Mario kicks his
cadmium-robed ass.

The incredible Italian takes the note to Russ T....

A Shy Guy stole my dictionary.
Please get it back from him! I'm... I'm losing IQ points!
Mario shows him the note.
You'd like me to translate this note for you?
Let's see...
Ah ha! It seems to be written in the language of the Shy Guys.
Well, this would be an easy task if I still had my Dictionary, but the Shy
Guys stole it.
I'll tell you what: I'll take care of the note for now.

Mario returns to the toybox yet again, sees and ignores a slot machine,
takes a ride on some rising floors, finally encountering his longtime
foe:

After promising to show it exactly what's unpleasant about being drunk, he
opens the chest and finds...

Yaaay! He quickly returns to Russ T.

"Hit yellow, green, red, and then blue."
Hmm... That's what the Shy Guy's note says.
What could that possibly refer to?

Probably these boxes that've been sitting in front of the Green Station
this entire time! A little smackity-smack later...

Wow, who would've guessed that the color-coded wall panels would be the
key to this enigma? With this done, Mario is now free to continue to the
final train station, and without a doubt the thrilling conclusion of this
stage of his adventure!
