On Saturday night, Cassie went from chipper to writhing on the couch and crying. After a few quick questions and taking her temperature, which was slightly elevated, I decided to take her to the ER. She was having sharp stomach pains on her right side. Also, there was a storm coming, and I didn't really want to wait to see if it got worse.

Mm...constipation isn't generally caused by the same sorts of illnesses as the gastroenteritis that you're describing, afaik. It *could* be knock-on-- e.g., C didn't feel well so didn't drink enough or eat enough fibre or ate too much dairy or some combo-- but the n/v/d you all see to have been hit by seems to be a classic stomach flu, probably viral.

Constipation in kids does happen frequently, though-- the bowel maturing a bit slowly is usually the culprit-- so unless it becomes chronic I wouldn't worry.

Yeah, that was the one thing that didn't really fit. She's gotten regular again since, though, so maybe just coincidence?

Cassie's fine, I'm almost back to normal, Jay's keeping food down, and so far Q's shown no symptoms. *fingers crossed*

Oh man, I feel for her SO MUCH, having been there myself. It's incredibly painful!

It was the writhing and crying that worried me most, tbh. I was almost certain it was appendicitis. I guess it's better we all ended up with a viral bug instead? :-)

It is! But you have to be careful with constipation, that it doesn't lead to blockages. You did all the right things. Pain+vomiting=hospital.

Next time though, ask them to slip some dilaudid in her IV to take off the pain edge.
