AWARE OF WHAT?

Apr 27, 2009 10:02

Oops for the dramatic subject title, what with the caps and all.
This is about the whole AWARE saga that has been snowballing on this tiny little island called Singapore.

Like most girls my age, we don't usually pay that much attention to whatever policies or whatever advocacy groups, even if they function for our benefits, or so they declare.

But with a snowball so big round and glaring, it's bound to catch my eye ^.~

After some hardcore catching up on the news, editorials and discussions over this matter, I have a nice little moment of "WHAT THE-?" as images of recent happenings in the US match up.

Granted AWARE is a relatively small group with agendas different from US groups like NORM. Erh, or at least they were originally different, can't be too affirmative now yeah? The two shouldn't be put into comparison, but their similarities behavior-wise and theory-wise are just too strong, particularly in the way that their motives and messages tend to be unclear and contradicting.

Feminism restricted to selective supremacies? Anti-abortion? Grabbing a known label and repackaging it for something else (which contents are either unknown or confusing to the public)?

OH MY G- erh, oops I might piss them off with that shhhh, I mean, OH MY GAWD! We have our own home-made Sarah Palins and Ann Coulters! Multiplied in numbers! They boomed out loud from this little (I don't mean "little" in any offensive way really) association on this little island.

But of course, when a seemingly serious matter is compared to one of a larger scale, it's bound to lose all that RAWR effect, not that RAWR effects are essentially good lah.

For those particularly interested, the press conference has its own unique dose of humour effect:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have no intension to contempt or offend the idea of feminism or females in general, nor homosexuality or homosexuals in general, nor any religious groups or identities.

You know, the latter part of this statement ↑ should've been redundant when the topic discussed is about some feminist advocacy group, that should've been focusing on gender equality and on meliorating needs of the female community. (Like, perhaps religious and homosexuality issues should also be scrutinised in a workforce union? WHAT?)

But the declaration I made is, ironically and sadly, rather necessary here.

Heave a sigh.
