I'm currently just finished the first year of my first H1B. H1B's are 3 year visa's, and can be renewed once.
To stay, I need some other Immigration document that allows it. The two most obvious are a Green Card and full on Immigration/Citizenship.
I've started looking into getting a Green Card. My employer will help pay for the process. It takes years to complete when you don't have a "family" stream to use to get one though. On the flip side though, as long as the green card process is underway, if my visa runs out, it can be extended until the Green Card process is done.
So, I'm here for at least 5 more years, most likely :)
Oh, and on that thread, if I have a Green Card, the worries about "family stream" immigration disappear as I'm allowed to stay as long as I want then, so at that point state specific family building programs *can* help.

It's really sad to think one day you might have to leave. How long does your VISA run for? Can you renew it once it is expired?
What has to be done in order to make it so that you can stay?
