AO3 meta tagging probs

Mar 14, 2013 03:01

So I never really use LJ anymore but I have to vent a little in regards to AO3's recent mod post on meta and an anon complaint I got in response to a comment.

Under the cut to save the people who are not interested from the text block )

The thing is: there is no "right" thing to do. Tag however the hell you like. That's best practice on AO3 as far as both the userbase and the people who run it are concerned.

If one person showed up to tell you you were upsetting loads of people, well, you really should ask yourself why only one person said something about it-and look, it's surely not because the others didn't want to. People are always vocal about things that annoy them. Stop thinking you upset "everyone in fandom who uses AO3." That's literally impossible to do with a single fanwork.

Relax :)

Thanks bb. I was feeling better, then I got a different anon in the same thread saying it seemed like I was looking for attention, so now I feel worse. Ugh I hate anon comments and I hate how some people don't take feelings into account.

The tagging system works fine for me. I have no idea why people didn't tell me they were upset. Literally. No. Idea.

I might go back to using LJ for a while. This whole thing made me feel so awkward.

Jfc, yes, you were doing it for the attention-to make sure that your work would show up for everyone who might be interested in it.

BECAUSE THEY WEREN'T, oh my God. *laughs* If I see something I'm not interested in reading in any tag I'm browsing, I'll scroll past, that's it, and I'm sure 99.9% of AO3 users do exactly that.

Do as you like, just *shrugs* really don't presume one person speaks for everyone.

You always make me feel better. ♥

I scroll past a ton of stuff I don't want to read. You're right--most people probably do exactly the same. Yeah, a few people complaining about tags months after the fact... Well, if it was a serious issue I would've heard about it earlier. So it must not be a serious issue.

Thanks love!
