Kung Fu Hustle and A Taste of Cherry

May 15, 2005 22:03

I saw Kung Fu Hustle today, which was silly and outrageous and a lot of fun (and, I'm sorry, I liked it more than Shaolin Soccer).

And then I came home and watched Taste of Cherry, which was somber and thoughtful and probing, the kind of film Ingmar Bergman would make early in his career if he'd been born in Iran in the 1940s. The main character ( Read more... )

I like how in the middle of all that you flipped off that lady in her car. Admittedly, if I was encountered by someone with a long story that ended in asking for cash, I wouldn't have given him more than the average panhandler, just because there's so many people here with similar stories asking for change. I think that's sad, because I'm getting really immune to people asking for money and if he actually did have a problem, I would have tuned it out.

Sounds natural enough to me. And I don't always give money to panhandlers, though usually I think I should have. ^_^

I don't always either, but I don't have an issue about it like some people. Admittedly, it's impossible to always give. There was a big (an admittedly idiotic at times) debate about it on the UC Berkeley community, where the opinions ranged from its-okay-to-give-sometimes to they're-worthless-people. I overheard a woman in NYC just a few weeks ago yelling at a guy who asked her for change about why should she give him money - I don't know if she did or not in the end.

Anyways, I think what you did was at least good for karma. :) You never know!

I just hope the man's daughter's okay. It only occurred to me this morning that I should have gotten her name; I would have liked to call and check up on her.

Kung Fu Hustle was so much better than Shaolin Soccer, and God of Cookery on top of that. It was so good.

"St. James Infirmary" is a terrific song. It plays a big role in The Plague, by Camus.

I haven't seen God of Cookery, though I have read The Kitchen God's Wife.... no soup for me.

I know next to nothing about Camus. Definitely should school myself on his work.

What's the story with St James Infirmary? I've never heard the song - is it about a real place? The only one I know is the clinic for sex workers in SF!

This hotel in New Orleans says that it might have been a military hospital during the Civil War.
