In a flowerpot on the windowsill in a small but cozy house Tadayoshi was enjoying himself. He was a plant with lots of green leafs but no flowers and were currently busy eating sunshine and drinking water. He had just woke up from a pleasant but long nap. The awful winter was finally coming to an end and he felt better already, taking in as much light as possible.
Spring was here and soon the summer would come. One summer that would make everything change.
At first he had mistaken the other for being the sun, drawing his attention with his brightly yellow petals. A shining light so mesmerizing Tadayoshi could do nothing but stare. When he had realized the truth he had thought that this must be the most beautiful thing in the whole world. A small sun standing lonely but proudly in the grass in the backyard on the other side of the window.
Everyday Tadayoshi watched the other, who he had decided to call Ryo. The name he had taken from the person giving him water and tending to him while he still was at the shop. It was a long time ago now, but he still remembered and held his memories fondly.
Often he would try to get the others attention, but why would a wonderful thing like a flower take any heed of an ordinary green plant.
One day, very suddenly, while Tadayoshi was watching out trough his window as usual he realized that he was in love. The thought made him happier than he had ever been before and he felt like he could grow tall as a tree all in one day, thanks to his feelings. He kept looking, seeing Ryo sway in the wind. He wondered how the wind felt and if he ever would be able to enjoy a summer breeze together with Ryo.
The days grew longer and so did Ryo, letting the summer make him stronger and even more shining in Tadayoshi's mind. And so the days went. Turning water and sun into energy again and again in a repeating pattern that never seemed to get boring thanks to Ryo.
Tadayoshi worried when the sunny days stretched out and his love seemed out of sorts, probably because of the absence of rain. Thankfully clouds came and gave him water and in no time at all Ryo recovered, and when he perked up again he was facing the window. Suddenly Tadayoshi felt nervous, he had observed the other for such a long time, he had dreamed and yearned for this moment since the spring turned to summer, yet now when the moment was here... He had no idea what he should do.
For the first time, Ryo was watching him back. The feeling was out of this world and it made him flutter on the inside.
He had been neglecting the real sun for his new one and wasn't feeling very well. Unexpectedly this led to one of the most incredible moments during his whole existence. Tasting the outside world after years behind protecting glass. The sun seemed greater, the wind was cooler than he ever could have imagined and being placed only about a meter away from the love of his life, this was without a doubt the best day he had, and ever would, experience.
He got two days and one night together with Ryo and it was more and better than he had ever dreamed. Those two days made Tadayoshi feel like a sprout again, full with strength and greener than ever before.
But when they came to take him back inside they almost stepped on Ryo, not seeing such a small and to them indifferent flower. Tadayoshi thought he might have died if they hadn't missed by a centimeter. If they really had stepped on him they would have crushed his love to death. Fortunately it ended up with just being a close call and Tadayoshi was brought back to his windowsill, leaving the other behind.
Even when back where he had always been, away from Ryo, Tadayoshi was happy. He could still see his love every day even if he was once again far away. Even better yet, Ryo was still watching back.
But not all stories have happy endings. All to soon the days became shorter and colder, with less sun and more rain. Fall was here and it showed no mercy bringing harsh wind, heavy rain and freezing nights.
It was painful watching Ryo wither away a little more each day, slowly getting closer to the end of summer. They watched each other with sadness and longing until the day when Ryo could no longer manage. Bending his once so proudly worn crown down unable to see anything but the icy ground. Now it was only Tadayoshi watching again.
And so one day in November, from his warm spot in the window he watched the last petal fall, slowly like a tear of yellow. At that moment he knew he would never see Ryo again. This was their goodbye. A final farewell as the cold took everything away from Tadayoshi, leaving one lone summer's time behind for him to treasure in his memory forever.
