You could try the temp route ... to get a taste of different types of work ... or start practicing and doing graphics on the side, or go the school loan route and return to school, living off that money while you study, many do this. Whatever you choose, best of luck!
I wish I had better advice, but I can kind of repost your scenario with the modification of "How do I get a Wardrobe/Costuming job that PAYS after 10 years of working as an Admin?" *sigh* I'm sorry work is screwing you (and other people) over...it's so not cool. The key, as far as I can tell, is getting a foot in a door. My hubby went back to school, which did involve loans, but because of that, one of his teachers has now recommended him for a job in the field he actually wants to be in. So it takes time, but can be worth it!

I'm sorry to hear about your job. It's a shame you can't make a living sewing costumes.Hopefully you'll find a better job that you enjoy.
