So, there's a ball coming up. I suppose this means I need to procure a date. I don't know who I should ask simply because I'm not sure who already has dates. Pehaps I should act like a Gryffindor and be brave by asking Hannah Abbott for volunteers.

Never works. Asking for volunteers, I mean.

Just pick a few girls and ask them.
Begin with the one most likely to say no, so you get some practise.

Since your giving advice do tell me, would it be considered rather rude to ask using this venue or should I try something a bit more cliche'?

Just commenting is okay, just don't do it in a one line sentence. Girls appreaciate being praised and flattered.

Or you can write a formal letter.
Or just ask them in a conversation.

It is up to you!

So for example I could say something like...

You know Hannah, I really enjoyed hanging out with you the other day in the library. You're company made what would have been a horrible excursion into one of the best trips to the library I've ever experienced.
