One Of THOSE Nights
SHINee, Onew/Minho
Jinki’s begins to notice his breathing, his chest slowly rising up and down. He registers that he’s going to wake up soon but he keeps his eyes closed just to savor this tranquil moment. The surface beneath him is soft, warm, and wet. Wet?
Jinki’s eyes shoot open when his hands palm watery goo. His body stiffens as he runs through last night’s events in his mind. Jinki’s sure that he went to sleep on his bed after making sure the other four were snoozing. He’s also sure that he doesn’t sleep on a water bed. Then he finally realizes that there’s no light. He blinks to make sure his eyes are open because he sees nothing but black.
“Ugh, what th-“
“Hyung, you’re awake?” A voice, not too far away from Jinki utters in the dark.
“Yeah….is that you, Minho?”
“Mmmhmm.” Jinki feels Minho shift his weight. A few seconds later, Jinki sees Minho’s face thanks to the candle that Minho has in his hand. The room or wherever they are in starts to slowly light up. Jinki notices that it’s nothing like their dorm. As a matter of fact, everything is a shade of pink with weird bumps on the wall.
“Um.....Minho?” Jinki slowly eases his body up and holds onto Minho’s arm. “Where….exactly are we?”
Minho shrugs and places the candle beside him. He stands and lifts Jinki up with one hand. “Looks like a cave or something.”
“I’m pretty sure I went to sleep in my bed. And I was supposed to wake up to open presents.” Jinki stares at Minho and quickly realized, “It’s Christmas!” He grabs onto Minho’s and shakes him fervently. “It’s Christmas, Minho!”
Minho smiles, trying to hide that he’s agonizing over the fact that he has to spend Christmas in a pink, gooey cave.
“Merry Christmas!” Jinki takes a step back and opens his arms with a big grin on his face, as if he forgot that he woke up in a foreign place. He waits for Minh to step into the hug, then he squeezes Minho really tight.
“Merry Christmas, hyung.”
Jinki continues grinning, loving every moment of this holiday spirit until- “Where’s the rest of them? Where’s Jonghyun? Where’s Kibum? Oh my god, where’s Taemin?!”
“I tried looking for them while you were sleeping, but this cave leads to nowhere.”
“Oh no, oh no, oh no!” Jinki starts to pace rapidly back and forth and sweat drops soon form around his forehead. “No! We’re in a cave! We’re lost! We must’ve sleepwalked here!”
When Jinki wouldn’t stop pacing, Minho decided to end the dizziness that it caused him. But when Minho takes a step towards Jinki, he falls. Jinki falls; they both fall.
The ground starts to move, or more precisely rise and a new light comes into view. A brighter one, a bluer one. “Can you please stop?” a voice echoes from the darker end of the cave.
The rumbling subsides and Jinki scrambles over to Minho, “Wh-who’s there?”
“What do you mean ‘who’s there?’, it’s me,” and the ground starts to move again. “You’ve been living inside of me for 4 months now? Did you get amnesia?”
Jinki could recognize this voice even in his grave. “Kibum?”
“Yes,” Kibum whines. “Why are you acting so weirdly?”
“Where are you? Why can’t I see you,” Jinki stares at the dark end, his hand squeezing the life out of Minho’s arm.
“Of course you can’t see me. You’re in my mouth.”
Jinki stops breathing for a millisecond. “What?” He squeezes Minho’s hand as tightly as his strength allowed him to, praying that this is some kind of prank.
“Hello? Earth to Lee Jinki. You are currently standing in my mouth. I’m a whale. You live in my mouth along with Minho. Ring a bell?”
Minho slowly pulls Jinki to his side. They exchange looks and they both know, without words, that they think this is some freaky business.
“Anyways, it’s Christmas. You should find the tree at the south end of my tongue. Your presents are there too. And no I didn’t get you a loofah, Minho. Ho ho ho!”
The two boys don’t move, still holding onto each other, too stunned to say anything.
“Oh, I see. You want your little alone time. Alright, I’ll shut up and sleep. Don’t forget to look for the mistletoe. And don’t’ get nasty in here!”
“I, you, I-I can’t, Kibum? I just......oh.” Jinki stares at the ground, which is apparently a tongue.
“Let’s go.” Minho drags the frozen Jinki to the tree, looking for a certain object dangling in the air. “At least we have presents.”
Jinki tries to piece everything together. Nothing makes sense and the fact that Minho is so calm is a bit unsettling.
“Jinki hyung,” Minho turns Jinki to face him. “Merry Christmas,” he leans in, taking advantage of Jinki’s shocked state, and graces his lips over Jinki’s. “I don’t have a present for you, but I hope you like that.”
Jinki stares wide-eyed, his fingers on his lips.
“Jinki hyung. Hyung…….hyung…………..hyung.”
Jinki’s eyes flutter open and Minho is staring down at him with his big eyes.
“Are you ok? You kept kicking the air in your sleep.” Minho wipes cold sweat off of Jinki’s forehead and helps him sit up.
“Th-this….is the dorm?”
Minho chuckles, “Yeah. Did you have a bad dream?”
Jinki lets out the loudest sigh and hugs Minho. “I’m so happy. You see, in my dream I woke up and I was in this cave and you were there too! But it wasn’t a cave, it was pink and bumpy and wet! Turned out to be Kibum’s mouth. And Kibum was a whale! And then there’s a Christmas tree in his mouth with presents under it. You led me to the tree and you ki-“ Jinki stops himself after realizing what he was going to say.
Minho scrunches up his eyebrows, “I think you had too much eggnog last night.”
“I think so too. It’s Christmas morning, right?” Minho nods. “Let’s go open our presents.”
Jinki gets up and secretly pinches himself; he winces. It’s not a dream. He sighs again and remembers to stay away from eggnog.
Jonghyun, Taemin, and Kibum are already outside on the ground that’s flooded with torn gift wrap. The two boys plop down besides them and start to open their gifts.
“So,” Minho leans into Jinki’s ear, “what happened after I led you to the tree?” Minho doesn’t move away and smirks at Jinki’s lack of response. He pulls away after Jinki starts to stutter, one hand on Jinki’s thigh and another unwrapping a gift.
“Hyung,” Taemin chimes, “what did you get?”
Minho throws his head back. “Ugh,” looking at his gift once again. “Not another loofah, Kibum!”
