Did they even give a reason?! Why would they fire someone who was obviously so inspirational to so many students?! Shit, usually when a school/school board gets it in their mind that they're going to terminate a teacher, it happens regardless of anyone's petitions or efforts or whatever, and it sucks. I've seen it happen. But generally they're supposed to give enough notice that the teacher can resign before it officially goes down as a termination, and then it won't look as bad when the teacher goes to look for another job. It's sad for the teachers who actually try to fight for their jobs though, because they're usually the ones who don't resign in time and then end up having it go down on record as a termination.

Anyway, I'm really sorry. You know, sometimes I have fantasies of seriously damaging the property of certain members of school boards/administration, lol. I'd never do it, of course, but damn.

I can't deny that this teacher made a legit mistake... He needed 16 credits from a university over 6 years and he had none. The school board had several other options, though. He's enrolled in all the classes he needs so he could've had the credits by the end of the semester. Here's an article from the local paper that explains it a bit better:

I see they spelled your friend's name wrong, ;).

Geesh, I think you may be right about them just not liking him and using this as a very easy excuse to get rid of him, :(. It sounds like he was willing to do whatever was necessary to remain in the position, although he did let it slide for quite a while.

Well, I hope he can find gainful employment somewhere soon, and I hope Drama Club survives! The whole situation is really unfortunate.

do you know Why they fired him or why he was even gone to begin with or back in classes at MTU?? and i can't believe they let students be there for the decision :S... that's kindof bad form too.

according to michigan law, teachers are required to get 3 credit hours per year by taking college courses. Griebel taught for 6 years and got none. This was a big screw up on his part, but the only option was not to fire him. He requested a semester suspension to renew his license (he is already enrolled in all the classes he needs to get the credits), and there were other options, such as a 2 year extension or a provisional license, but they chose to terminate his employment. There is also no good reason for them to fire him from the position of drama club director.

Any community members (including students) have the right to sit in on board meetings, so they had to let us.

do you think maybe they're choosing that because they were going to have to cut more ppl soon anyways? i know we lost some foreign language and art ppl a few years ago because they just couldn't afford to keep everyone... maybe they're just using it as an excuse to have an easy way to choose who goes. they've obviously overlooked this for awhile...

well, they're interviewing replacements, so they won't have cut down on any staff... and it'll be much less cost-effective for them if they have to hire both a new teacher and drama director (which they may very well have to do) than keeping Griebel in both positions.
A lot of it could have to do with the fact that the school just didn't like him and his unusual methods (which were exactly what made so many students love him).
