Doing Shipping Wrong, Day Two: the ship you love because it really never will happen

Day two! The ship I love most because I know they will never be romantic?

I was actually a little worried when I saw another modern adaptation of Sherlock, and was really worried when I learned about the gender-bend for Watson. It just seemed so weird. The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson is one of my favourites across the fandoms it appears in, and although I occasionally go in for a bit of Johnlock (who doesn’t? It writes itself!), I really didn’t look forward to them making one of the characters female so that it could be done as a heterosexual couple.

BUT, I quickly changed my tune about this show and have completely fallen in for it. There are many reasons for this, and they all basically end with this:

Joan is sass incarnate

Sass. Incarnate.

Joan is absolutely incredible, and I love everything about her. But what I love even more than Joan Watson is the relationship that is developing between her and Sherlock.

the artist’s tag: Explain what you have been to me and what I believe you can be to me … partner.

Which is everything I love about this pairing. They are equal and different and they make up for those differences and accept them and challenge them and I love that. I love that they are a man and woman who do that. It doesn’t have to be about attraction. They are brought together professionally and stay together because they make each other better, and they find each other interesting, and they like each other. This is what I love about them, and what makes them interesting.

I am obviously all for the UST, but in this case, its lack is so refreshing and gives so much more to their dynamic.

Also this shit happens:

COME ON

They are besties and I love it so much. They also have super-serious discussions about their feelings. AND Sherlock attacked Watson randomly throughout an episode because she had been in an home-invasion during a case and he thought the surprise would help her learn self-defense.

So she threw something at his face and sass-attacked right out of the room.

Those are all the reasons I love it. Now, I really truly believe that it will never happen, mostly because the writers have said it won’t. I applaud them for this; we have had so many male/female crime partners go into the romantic side of the relationship (Bones, Castle) that I really don’t want to see another. I always lose interest in the show once it does finally happen. Plus, I like that they are basically keeping Joan Watson true to the canon, and just doing the gender-swap. She doesn’t need to have a romantic relationship just because they are now man-and-woman who both appear to be het. They can be heterosexual and of opposite genders and not have sex and still have respect and admiration and love for each other and it can be good god dammit.

I have feelings.
