PERSONALITY:
Karkat is anger personified, fitting his Cancer sign to a T. This ornery troll rarely smiles and he is almost always arguing with or insulting someone. His typing quirk, typing in all caps, reflects this pretty well. He is stubborn and can be pretty full of himself. But most of this behavior is a front.
One reflection of Karkat’s inner nice guy is his friendship with the other trolls. He often complains about the idiocy of his team mates, but becomes their leader and takes his plans rather seriously. Although he may not admit it, he is pretty close to nearly all the trolls in the session. The only two trolls he dislikes from the beginning are Equius and Vriska, although he tolerates them. Later he develops platonic hatred towards Eridian and fear towards Gamzee, but only after they begin murdering their fellow team members. When his best friend Sollux is killed by the Vast Glub, Karkat is genuinely upset, begins crying, and goes into a state of shock that he has to be slapped out of by Jack Noir. He feels extremely guilty about the incident because he failed to save Sollux in time. Later on, when Eridian and Gamzee go on murderous rampages, he pulls a wounded Sollux down a flight of stairs in order to hide him from Gamzee (accidently knocking out Sollux’s teeth in the process which he attempts to stick back in). He tries desperately to resurrect Kanaya by kissing her after she is slain by Eridian, later revealing to past Eridian that he considered her one of his closest friends. Gamzee calls himself Karkat’s “best friend” and despite his insistence to the contrary, he is genuinely worried about the other troll when he fails to check in for a while after Eridian kills Feferi and Kanaya. He also becomes close to Terezi, and it is hinted they may have a matespritship (See See Troll Romance).
Speaking of romance, Karkat is an avid watcher of romcoms, and has an in depth knowledge about anything to do with romantic films. He could go on for hours on the subject if you let him. Perhaps partially as a result of this, his romantic standards are extremely high, especially for blackrom romance. The other trolls often come to him for advice on the subject. This is ironic because Karkat’s love life has been, for the most part, largely unsuccessful.
Karkat is extremely secretive about his blood color. He types in gray unlike the other trolls who type in their blood color to keep his a secret from the other trolls. In troll society, the color of your blood determines your rank in the caste system. Karkat was born with bright red blood; a mutant color. He is the only member of his species known to posses it. If his secret was revealed, he would be probably be killed and would certainly be shunned. If asked about it, he becomes extremely defensive and refuses to tell even his closest friends. He immediately befriends Jack Noir when he discovers they share the same blood color, despite the fact that Jack had stabbed him only seconds before. Karkat also has “nubby” horns, which are a matter of pride in Troll Society. He is very sensitive about both subjects, and insulting either usually resulting in a tirade and a flood of curse words. Karkat has a deep seated fear of losing his friendship with the other trolls, especially because of his blood color. Whenever he gets into arguments with Sollux, he always asks him afterword if they are still friends. When Terezi discovers his blood color, he begs her not to tell the other trolls until they respect him as a leader.
Because of these sensitivities he is incredibly easy to tease, making him a prime target for jokes. He hates himself more than anyone else and at one point, he believed himself to be his own kismesis, or “fated nemesis” because of his tendency to get into arguments with his past or future self via bulletins. He believes that the universe is conspiring against him and bears a great weight of guilt for killing the Troll’s Lusii, including his own, (whether he is truly responsible for all of their deaths is debatable), and for Sollux’s death. This causes him to have a very pessimistic view of the world. When John suggests that the trolls and the kids work together to beat the kid’s session, Karkat refuses to even try, simply stating that they are already doomed.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
• Karkat is a troll, and thus is pretty good at spewing insults. This doesn’t win him a lot of admirers though, and doesn’t do much in terms of persuasion usually either.
• Moving on to actually useful abilities, Karkat is pretty talented at wielding his sickle. It is his ambition to one day join the ranks of the thresecutioners, the “most lethal members” of his society.
• He is horrible at computer programming despite his love for it, but he is quite good at unwittingly creating viruses.
• Karkat is a talented leader, nearly beating Sgrub, despite being doomed to fail from the start, and earning the respect of the other trolls even if he doesn’t believe he has. Despite this though, his plans have a tendency to be a bit ridiculous, as his plan to get revenge on the kids is simply to troll them.
• He is very good at giving relationship advice, despite the fact he doesn’t have the best love life himself, although he may make fun of you while he’s at it.
