...Nakakainis ang ganitong buha-a-ay… nakakainis ang ganitong buha-a-ay…
I just came home from school. My brain is on the verge of maximum exhaustion. We had 5 hours straight lecture on basic bacteriology. It was just review so we didn’t expand on every microbe. HOWEVER, since it was just a review, the lesson covered so MANY bacterial classifications. Last night I was studying the Mycobacterium and Clostridium species. Mycobacterium has its own diagnostic procedure, and Gram staining is inappropriate for it. Clostridium spp. are Gram positive bacilli. We were given a photocopy handout of our lectures for microbiology, so we know what will be our next topics. As I have said, I studied Mycobacteria and Clostridia. I DID NOT EXPECT that our lecturer will go all the way through enteric bacteria! My mind was not ready for it and I had a hard time absorbing all the information. Enteric pathogens are the most difficult to differentiate because there are just so many laboratory tests. My braincells were not functioning at all, honestly! Salmonella is positive for this test but not for this; whereas Shigella is positive to this but not to that and that also; Shigella is comoparable to E. coli because of this and that while Salmonella is comparable to Citrobacter because of this and blah blah. Plus, there are tables of comparison between species. All I can recognize are the positive and negative sign; I don’t even want to process other words. I willingly reject it, because I cannot take it anymore. My butt was hurting too but my head was hurting more. And because I am unable to concentrate anymore, I entertained senseless thoughts in my mind. I thought of writing my then current pain here in this blog. I thought that why do I always end up writing unhappy experiences in my lj… is it this my form of releasing my emotions? I guess that’s not bad, but the thing is, I only write bad stuffs and I don’t think that’s so nice enough to read.
I was reading this book and then I stumbled at these words…
Isn’t this racial discrimination? I know that saying “black” to describe the people is already a form of racial discrimination. However, I am not sure about the “Eskimo”. As far as I can remember, I learned at school that it is also considered now as a form of racial discrimination; similar to how “intsik” is racist term to Filipino now and should be corrected with “Tsino (Chinese)”. I am not sure with this but I know I’ve heard the “instik” story even on the tv. I guess it’s like a person is more appropriately directed with his/her place of origin or his/her nationality rather than his/her racial origin.

Today is a different day.
Today I was at school from 8 to 5.
And, our first lesson was about the Vibrionaceae family.
I was giggling silently upon hearing the plenty Japanese words.
Hello serotypes Ogawa, Inaba and Hikojima. Hello Kanagawa + V.parahaemolyticus who produces beta hemolysin on Wagatsuma agar.
Diseases brought by Vibrio species are common in Japan because these organisms are frequently found on seafoods and Japanese usually eat them raw. The most usual disease is gastroenteritis (vomiting and diarrhea as symptoms). And the antidote is simple, just add vinegar. If you’re gonna eat raw seafood, might as well soak it up with vinegar first so that you wouldn’t acquire the organism and be infected afterwards.
I believe there is also another organism (I don’t know if it’s a parasite or a bacteria, but I think it’s a parasite I just can’t remember what), that is the major cause - OKAY I REMEMBER. It’s not due to any pathogenic organism. If I remember it right, Japan has the highest number of cases of colon cancer because they like to eat smoked food, like smoked fish. I know it’s kinda weird to say, ‘they like to smoke their food’ but that’s exactly how you describe it, so… if my memory serves me right that is. I know it has really something to do with smoked fish and cancer, there is a statistical relationship, I believe (although I’m not good at stat). I’m just not sure if it really is colon cancer.
