Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 Chapter 6 Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 Chapter 10 Chapter 11 Days passed, and Adam could never get the nerve to leave Kris. It would hurt him so bad, and Kris had suffered through more pain than he deserved. Adam knew he would have no choice soon though. He got weaker every day he stayed, and if he didn't go on his own soon, he would vanish, probably forever. That must be the reason angels stayed hidden. He hadn't ever thought that there was a logical reason. He just thought it was unwritten rule, meant to one day be broken.
With every day that passed, Kris also became more attached. Adam tried to detach him slowly by disappearing every so often, but, of course, assuring Kris that he would be back. However, the more he did that, the clingier Kris got when he was around. He had even resorted to taking Adam into the bathroom with him while he showered so they could talk. Adam was also expected at the studio and everywhere else Kris went, the smaller man keeping his body close to the angel's at all times.
Even though Adam tried to act like he didn't enjoy it, he did. He loved Kris, and it broke his heart whenever he wasn't around. It made him mad that he couldn't stay. He was dead. He shouldn't be able to, in a way, die again.
Fair or not, Adam knew it was going to happen, and it was going to happen soon. Of course, he put it off as long as he could, but when he was finally left no choice, he sat Kris down for another painful talk. Tears were in Kris's eyes before they were even seated.
"Kris...," Adam began, throat tight. "You know, or I hope you know, that I don't want to leave."
Kris only stared.
"But I have to..."
Still, Kris only stared. Adam swallowed and continued.
"When I came to you, I didn't know that it would have a consequence. I should have known, or everyone's deceased loved ones would be with them all the time, but I wasn't thkning about that. I was only thinking about you and how much I missed and loved you. There is a consequence though. I'm getting weak. I've been getting weak for awhile now, but I didn't think it was serious. I can't pretend anymore. It's so hard for me to stay here. If I don't leave soon, I'm not going to be able to protect you when you really need me."
Surprisingly, Kris gave a little smile. "That's okay. That just means you'll be even more human-like."
"No, Kris, I won't," Adam said, voice even sadder. "I'll just disappear."
Kris shook his head in denial, but upon seeing the truth written on Adam's face, began to cry.
"But I do need you, all the time!"
"You don't," Adam told him gently.
"I do!" Kris insisted.
"If I leave, we'll be able to see each other again someday, and be together forever. If I stay, it will be for a week tops, and then I'll be gone forever."
Kris cried harder, his little body trembling violently. Adam pulled him into a tight hug, but didn't say a word. Kris didn't either, taking that time to actually think about what Adam was saying, something he didn't really do before. He hadn't been strong enough. It was so much easier to live in denial. However, that was no longer an option. He had to face reality. Adam was leaving. He had to. Kris knew Adam wouldn't lie to him about this, and it wasn't fair for Kris to make Adam "sick" for his own selfish reasons. He loved Adam, and that meant sacrificing his own happiness for Adam's health.
It took a few minutes and all of his strength, but Kris finally got the courage to mumble into the angel's chest, "When are you leaving?"
"The sooner the better," Adam answered, giving the top of Kris's head a little kiss.
"Will you...can you stay one more night?"
"Yes."
Kris let out a sigh of relief and stayed wrapped in his arms until it was finally nearly impossible to keep his eyes open. Then, he forced himself up, took Adam's hand and led him to the bed, where he was then wrapped into his arms once again.
He kept his tired eyes shut all night, trying to cry himself to sleep, but the only part of that he succeeded in was crying. Adam tried to console him by playing with his hair, giving him gentle kisses and, when all else failed, humming a peaceful lullabye, but it was no use. Typically, it would have worked, but not when Kris knew that was the last night he would be doing that.
When the sun finally started peaking in through the window, Kris couldn't cry anymore, even though he knew that it was all about to happen.
Slowly opening his sore eyes, Kris turned to face Adam. He stared at his angelic face, wanting to just stay like that forever. Adam stared longlingly back at Kris for awhile before saying softly,
"I have to go."
"I know," Kris told him hoarsely.
"Kris, I know you love me, and I love you too, but please...find a nice husband and start a family. You'd be the greatest daddy."
That was the last thing Kris wanted to do at that moment, but he still assured Adam he would try. Adam thanked him before rising off the bed slowly. Kris stood as well, being pulled into a hug. Kris wrapped his arms around Adam's waist too, and buried his face in his chest, trying to memorize every little detail of the man he loved.
After what seemed like forever, but still didn't feel long enough, the men separated enough to kiss.
"I love you," Adam said, taking Kris's hand in his and looking deep into his eyes. "This isn't goodbye."
"I love you too," Kris told the angel.
Adam kissed the top of Kris's hand before gently letting go and distancing himself. He gave Kris one more bright, beautiful smile before fading away.
Letting out a little cry, Kris curled into a ball on his bed, feeling like he was going to crumble apart. He knew, deep down, that he may find someone he would want to spend the rest of his human life with eventually, but he would always be waiting for Adam to come back and take him to their afterlife, where they would finally be together forever.
