Author's Notes: This is the domestic 'verse I promised! Adam Lambert opened his door to find a soaking wet, exhausted Kris Allen standing there. He stared for a second, then wordlessly dragged Kris inside, immediately relieving him of the two large suitcases, laptop case, and carry- on that were burdening him. This was the last thing he had expected to interrupt his quite evening at home, but nothing could have made him happier.
“Kris, what the hell? What are you doing here? And why do you look like you walked here from the airport? Last I talked to you, you were taking a break, re acquainting yourself with your wife, and hanging with friends and family in Arkansas before you take on another album. What gives?” Adam looked at Kris, worried. He looked lost and confused and just tired.
“Katy and I got a divorce. My “break” should have been so we could fix ourselves, so that I could show her and the rest of the people back home that I hadn’t changed all that much just because I’m famous. But the thing is, that is a total lie and they all know it. Katy wanted me to give it all up, Adam. The fame, the record deal, all of it. Everything I worked for. But worst of all, she wanted me to give you up. She said she was tired of our marriage competing with my relationship with you. “
Adam was confused. Kris divorced? Katy thinking that he was her competition? As much as Adam would like to believe it, he doubted he had ever had a chance in hell of taking Kris away from Katy. But he could ask questions later. Presently, Kris was soaked to the skin and shivering. Taking care of that was more important than having his curiosities satisfied.
“You can explain all that later, baby,” Adam said soothingly, running a hand through Kris’s wet hair. “Why don’t you go into the bathroom and take a hot bath? There’s jets in the tub, and all kinds of stuff to warm you up. I’ll put your clothes in the wash, and we can unpack you and get you settled into the guest room later.”
At that, Kris looked grateful, and Adam led him up the stairs and into the bathroom attached to the master bedroom. “This one is better than the guest bath and the main bath,” he said with a grin. “Help yourself to any goodies you might find in here that might make you feel better. I’ll let you change and get into the tub, then I’ll come back for your clothes.”
Kris looked up at Adam with those wide brown eyes that Adam could never resist, and Adam pulled him into a tight embrace, squeezing briefly, then releasing Kris and leaving him to undress in private.
Five minutes later, Adam knocked tentatively on the bathroom door, and he heard Kris’s faint call for him to come in.
Upon entering, Adam found Kris relaxing in a tub full of vanilla scented bath water with the jets on full force. If Adam really looked, he could see everything. He had always had more respect for Kris and the boundaries that had to exist in this friendship than that, though, so he carefully kept his eyes averted as he collected Kris’s wet plaid shirt, jeans, socks, and boxer briefs. He had to smile a little at that- he was holding Kris Allen’s underpants. That was probably the closest he’d ever get to getting into Kris’s pants, so he’d better enjoy it.
He quickly chastised himself for even having such thoughts. Get a grip, Lambert, he thought. There’s no telling how long he will need to stay here, and you need to remember your place.
It had been quite awhile since Adam had shared space with Kris, and his defenses were down. It seemed his evening would need to be devoted to remembering the rules set down about what was and was not inappropriate behavior when it came to living with Kris Allen. If he crossed lines, it would surely be disastrous.
Kris didn’t seem to have the same boundaries that Adam did though, because, after a moment, he said, “Adam, why don’t you stay in here with me? We can take care of the clothes and all that later. I don’t want you to go.”
Once again, Kris turned up the adorable in his big brown puppy eyes, and even stuck out that full bottom lip that had tortured Adam on so many nights and had become a regular feature in his masturbatory fantasies.
Adam had never been able to resist adorable Kris, but he figured that he’d better try this time. He sighed. “Kris, don’t you think it’s a little weird to ask your big, flaming best friend to stay in the bathroom with you while you’re stark naked, in a tub full of steamy water, when you know that you are the stuff erotic dreams are made of for said best friend?”
Adam looked at Kris carefully, waiting for an answer. He had to make sure things didn’t get awkward because Kris was lonely and vulnerable. He couldn’t let this little stay start out with morning after regrets.
Kris seemed totally relaxed and sure of the idea though, and he said so. “Adam, since when have we ever been “normal” best friends? We’ve always crossed all kinds of lines that other people would find to be inappropriate. Now stop worrying and get in this tub with me.”
Adam balked. Get in the tub with him? NO NO NO!
But Adam’s actions defied his rational thoughts, and he stripped off his sleep pants and walked over to the tub, unabashedly naked, and slid in opposite Kris.
“That’s better,” Kris said, smiling the first real smile Adam had seen since he had arrived on his doorstep.
“So tell me about this divorce, your family, your friends? I want to know why you showed up here unannounced, soaking wet, when we haven’t seen each other in nearly five months?”
Adam waited patiently- that was always important with Kris. That was one of their unspoken rules. They didn’t push each other. Kris would talk when he was ready.
“Well, Adam,” Kris began, “things hadn’t been like they should have been with Katy for a long time. We weren’t fighting or anything, at least not at first. We were just distant. She couldn’t understand why I had pretty much turned my Hybrid from Idol and my office at home into what was pretty much a shrine to my time in the mansion and on the tour. She didn’t share all that, that huge life changing experience. She couldn’t understand what had happened to the Kris that she sent off to Hollywood.”
Kris stopped talking for a minute, but Adam instinctively knew that he was far from done. It often took awhile for Kris to open up, but once the dam broke, the words didn’t stop pouring out for a long time. Adam could wait- he somehow thought that this might involve him somehow, as Kris had alluded to when they had spoken out front.
Kris finally continued, seemingly having gathered his thoughts. “I constantly talked about a time, an experience that she couldn’t share at all. Because she wasn’t there with us, she didn’t understand it. She started to feel shut out. It was like every time I mentioned Idol or the tour she’d get this cold, faraway look in her eyes. Like if she never heard the words American Idol again it would be too soon. Finally, it got to where if I mentioned Idol at all, she’d leave. Go to the store, to the bar, wherever. Anything to get away from the man she thought was her husband, but was really just a stranger. I’ve always been able to tell exactly what Katy is thinking, and vice versa. You don’t grow up with someone and date them and be their friend for that long without that ability. “
Kris sank further down into the water, warming himself up a bit more. Adam felt the drain under his own butt and pulled it, then turned around to turn on more hot water. Kris must have been freezing, and they’d stay in the tub as long as it took for him to be completely warm.
After a moment, Kris sat up a little and said, “Thanks, I was freezing. Anyway, after awhile, it got to where she turned her attention to you. She realized that I was getting out of bed to text you in the middle of the night. Every space of the house was covered with photos of you and me. Even on our anniversary, as you know, of course, I texted you all through dinner. I talked to you all the time, and barely acted like she was even there. It was like this shift in priorities, you know? You were clearly more important to me, and with you was where I wanted to be. I didn’t try to hide it. Eventually, I went on tour, and we barely spoke. The fans figured out that I had no clue what was going on with her in that Rickey.org interview, and that made her even madder. She was humiliated by the whole world knowing that her own husband didn’t know what was going on with her, and apparently didn’t care. At that, I did some serious soul searching, and realized that she was right. I didn’t care about her like I used to. You’re the one I need Adam. I’ll always love Katy in some way, but certainly not in a life partner, can’t live without her kind of way. I’m not sure I ever did love her that way. We got married because it was the next logical step, I think. I think she loved me in that way, but I am more certain than ever that the feeling was never mutual. I think it took meeting you to make me realize things about myself that I had refused to acknowledge before. My relationship with you showed me what real, till death do us part love should feel like. You’re the only one for me, Adam.”
Adam stared at Kris in disbelief. He couldn’t be serious. But everything pointed toward Kris being serious as a heart attack. Adam simply sat there, naked in a tub of bubbly hot water with Kris Allen, daring not to believe that every dream he’d had over the last two years had just come true.
