Author's Notes: Since I am snowed in, rather than going to school and work today, I was able to work on some fic! Lovely surprise for us all. I am currently researching Balinese culture, and dividing chapter 9 into 4 or 5 parts, since it surrounds one big event. I am still, however, alternating Adam and Kris's POV's, just like I have been doing chapter to chapter. So far I have found out that Bali is a gay friendly, popular vacation spot. I figured as much, since we all know that Adam and posse went there on vacation IRL. I still have yet to find a straight answer regarding marriage equality as far as the legal end goes, so I am taking a bit of artistic license and having same sex marriage be legal in Bali in this fic. However, I am still researching the local culture, and I plan to respect that, as well as respect Kris and Adam's differing spiritual backgrounds and persuasions. If I get far enough, the last part(s) of Chapter 9 will go up tonight or tomorrow. IDK though, that is just a rough, hopeful timeline, as always. Enjoy!

How It always Should Have Been chapter 9 part 3
Kris, Adam, Kim, Leila, and Neil left the jewelry store, pleased with the ring purchase. Kris couldn't help looking over at Adam fondly every few seconds. He was the luckiest man in the world. No matter what hardships they might face when they left their exotic vacation spot and returned to their real lives, he was happy now, and would be forever, and would make sure Adam was always happy as well. As long as they had each other and the support of their families, everything would be just fine.
The five of them had the driver drop them at a nice- looking restaurant on the edge of the beach where they were staying. Kris tipped the man generously for his promptness and discretion, and they went inside. The lovely hostess showed them to a secluded outdoor table for five. After settling in, their server arrived, and they ordered appetizers and cocktails. Neil ordered a bottle of their finest champagne, poured some for everyone, and proposed a toast.
“I admit this is not the life I had ever imagined for my son. Sometimes, life throws you curve balls. When Kim and I discussed all the things that we might have to deal with when we were first discussing starting a family, this was never one of them. But she knew about you, son, for a long time. I denied it, because I didn't know how to handle it. But I want you to know that I couldn't be prouder or happier. This is the life you were meant to lead. Adam, thank you for making my son happy, and welcome to the family. To Adam and Kris,” Neil finished, raising his glass.
Everyone else raised their glasses, and there were sentimental tears in their eyes at Neil's words.
“So,” Leila said after a moment of silence, clearing her throat. “We have a wedding to plan. I am thinking something simple, small. If you want a grand Hollywood affair, boys, when we get back home, you can have one. But, as there is marriage equality here, but not in the state of California, I think it makes sense to do it right here. Kim, what do you think?”
“I think that sounds absolutely perfect,” Kim said enthusiastically. “Boys?”
Kris looked at his mother. He wanted Adam to have the wedding of his dreams, and he knew Adam's penchant for lavish parties and grand affairs. What if a simple beach wedding wasn't what he wanted?
But Kris needn't have worried. “I think it's a wonderful idea,” Adam said, a smile lighting up his face. “I like the idea of keeping the actual wedding private, family only. We can always have a party or something to celebrate with friends, maybe on our first anniversary. But I think we have been through enough as far as all of this is concerned already, and when we get home, the press is going to make our lives a living hell. I want to share this with our immediate families. You've been here every step of the way. Mom, Kim, I know you said you wanted to plan the wedding. But there really isn't much to plan. I think we should call Dad, Neil, and Daniel, and have them flown out here next week. Mom, there should be enough room in your cottage for Neil and Dad, and Daniel can stay with Kim and Neil for a couple of days, just for the wedding. Is that ok with everyone?” Adam looked around, apparently waiting for a response.
“It's fine with me,” Kris said, relieved that his fiancee wasn't insisting on the wedding of the century. “I like simple. And Mom and Leila can help us pick out tuxes tomorrow. When Eber, Neil, and Daniel arrive, they can be fitted for suits. Somewhere in all of that, our moms need dresses, too. Maybe we can shop for that while we do tux fittings? I want this to happen as quickly as possible.”
Kris waited for a response, then noticed that Leila was busy on her phone.
He gave her a questioning look, and she smiled. “I just sent texts to Eber, Daniel, and Neil,” she explained. “Today is Tuesday. I expect them here no later than Friday. That way, they can get suits on Saturday, and the wedding can happen no later than next Tuesday or Wednesday. And there won't be any need to travel, as we are in the perfect honeymoon spot already!”
She looked simply delighted with herself, and Kris and everyone else laughed along with her.
“Sounds like a plan to me,” Kris said, and Adam nodded in agreement. “We weren't planning to leave this island for the next month anyway.”
Just then, their server, a lively, attractive Balinese girl, arrived with their appetizers. They had told her to give them the house favorites, and she had outdone herself, presenting lovely platters of steamed shrimp, oysters, light salads with some sort of tangy dressing, and many more local delicacies.
They all dug in, as the server brought them glasses of water and cocktail refills. Within the hour, everyone was full and satisfied. Kris reached for his wallet, but Neil stopped him.
“Son, this night is about celebrating you and Adam, your new beginning. Let me treat you to dinner, at least, since you've treated us all to this lovely vacation, and have given us, as parents, the priceless gift of seeing our children happy.”
Kris looked at his father, and felt tears threatening once again. He was still very touched by all the support he and Adam were receiving. His emotional state must have shown, as he felt Adam grasp his hand underneath the table and squeeze tightly, then kiss his temple gently. Kris closed his eyes, enjoying the kiss, then reached into his pocket for the rings. Without a word, he opened the box with Adam's in it, and slid it onto his lover's left ring finger, all the while staring into his beautiful blue eyes. At this point, they both had silent tears streaming steadily down their cheeks. Adam took the other ring box from Kris and returned the gesture. They kissed softly, their proud, weeping parents looking on. This was a truly beautiful new beginning for them all.
