“So…” Kris kept his eyes to the cement under the feet, his hand almost felt like it was on fire in Adam’s. “Where are we going?” He had to admit, he was still severely disappointed and hurt that his date had never shown up, but he were glad that Adam was there. He didn’t really want to spend the entire night alone in the café sulking until they kicked him out.
Adam smirked, stopping them at the corner and whistling loud enough for Kris’ ears to ring a few seconds after, a taxi pulling to a stop in front of them soon enough. Of course, as soon as they were in, Adam leaned forward to tell their driver the destination low enough for Kris not to hear. Then they were off, and Adam nudged his shoulder lightly. “So, what all do you know about your date?”
Kris felt himself flush and quickly turned away. There was no way he could ever tell Adam any of this, he’d be taunted for weeks on end about it. “I, um…” He shifted a little before looking back. “N-not much.”
Adam stared for a minute before grinning. “So you were that excited about a blind date? Really?”
Oh hell. There’s no way around this. Dammit. He sighed, shaking his head. “He’s… we… we trade emails.” He flinched, ready for Adam to start laughing or something, but instead Kris hear silence, and for a second he thought maybe Adam hadn’t heard when a warm hand fell on his knee, squeezing slightly. He looked up to the brightest, kindest blue eyes he’d ever seen. Just like when they first saw each other, he stared for a bit. Only this time, Adam was staring right back at him.
“It’s nothing to be embarrassed about.” Adam patted his knee, flashing a grin that almost made Kris glad his date didn’t show up - almost - and then pulling back and leaning back against the seat. “I’ve heard of people finding love in much weirder places.”
“Like the store they work together?” Oh… Oh no you didn’t just say that. Adam started laughing. Oh great, I did.
But Adam didn’t seem phased, he just nodded, still grinning. “Yes, yes like that.” He sighed, taking Kris’ hand and tracing patterns along the back. It made Kris’ skin tremble and dance and all sort of weird things it shouldn’t be doing. “You know, the thing that surprises me the most… I’d think you’d have people stumbling over each other just to get your attention.” Kris looked up, eyes locking with those same sincere blues again. “I mean, from what I can tell you’re funny, you’re kind, you obviously care a lot about the people close to you…” Kris could already feel himself getting hot under the praise, but Adam was obviously going to say more, what with the hand gestures and all. “And you are seriously cute, if my coming onto you when you hired me didn’t tell you anything.” The wink sent him over; Kris dropped his eyes and blushed redder than was probably possible, smiling a little. He just figured Adam saw him as eye candy, he never knew Adam had so many other things to praise him for.
A few seconds passed in relative silence, the only sound coming from the tires rolling over the road, the rhythm almost kicking up a song in Kris’ head, when Adam spoke up again. “So how long have you been in LA?” Kris shook the few chords floating around in his head out and looked up at Adam. His expression was… measuring? It was like he was trying to figure out everything about him by staring - though with the piercing blue it did feel somewhat like they were boring into his very soul so he didn’t doubt that was exactly what was going on.
“I… um.” Stop stuttering. Come on, pull yourself together. “A few years…” He shrugged. “When I turned twenty one I came out here with my dad to start… the shop…” Oh. Why’d you say that. He doesn’t need to know that. Please just don’t ask anything else…
“Oh, I see.” Adam’s smile disappeared just as quickly as it came. “Your… dad’s gone, isn’t he?” When Kris nodded Adam sighed, reaching across the cab to pull Kris into his arms. It was warm, nice, feeling like a home he’d never known of. The feeling made him sink further into the embrace, his face pressing against Adam’s chest. He could’ve sworn he felt Adam’s heart hammering against his own skin.
Kris closed his eyes, feeling his eyelashes catch on Adam’s shirt. He shuddered, feeling too close, like being in that much contact with him was too intimate. But Adam’s arms just closed around him a little tighter, and the quiet hum of the street below them was the only sound again. Kris smiled, feeling Adam’s shirt move with his lips, and he slowly drifted off to it all, feeling safe and all worries disappear in the home Adam’s embrace made.
“Hey, we’re here.” Kris blinked awake, looking up to find Adam grinning down at him. He managed to wiggled himself out of Adam’s arms before he started blushing and stretched, then peered out the window. He smiled seeing the Santa Monica pier almost completely devoid of people, the dark waves almost black against the shore. He looked back at Adam, who just shrugged. “Little bit of last minute planning. It’s too late for most date-worthy things.”
Kris held out a hand, popping his door open and grabbing Adam’s hand. “It’s perfect.” He pulled the both of them out, waiting long enough for Adam to finish paying the driver before they rushed off together toward the hypnotic lapping of the waves. Adam’s warm hand in his, the light wind flicking ocean spray and coolness over his skin and Adam’s light humming really did make it perfect. It was simple, just walking down along the pier, past the closed Pacific Park, but he really couldn’t imagine something better - he thought even without his original date but his mind batted that down as soon as it came. Still, he liked this with Adam. It was quiet and calm as opposed to how they usually were together, something that he was sure Adam appreciated as well as he did.
“Have you been here before?” He looked up at Adam, seeing those sharp blue eyes staring out across the water. With the soft moonlight playing across his features it made him look even more out-of-this-world than usual. Kris flinched a little, he needed to stop thinking things like that.
He looked down, releasing Adam’s hand to drop down onto the end of the pier and start untying his sneakers, grinning when Adam chuckled and started doing the same. “A few times.” He paused, his hands stilling on the laces. “I… haven’t been back here since…”
“It’s okay.” Adam bumped his shoulder, grinning. “Just wondering.” He was quiet again as he stood back up. Kris glanced over, seeing black tipped toes flex and then looked up as a hand smacked his ear lightly. He took Adam’s hand, pulling himself up and holding his converse in his hand as they moved back onto the sand, now walking slowly along the damp sand. He felt Adam nudge at him and then his vision was directed to the ferris wheel on the boardwalk. “How about, next week after work we come back here.” His eyes flickered over to meet Adam’s smiling eyes. “We’d be here just in time to see a perfect sunset at the top there.”
Kris smiled. “We’re not even finished with the first date and you’re already asking me on another one?”
Adam shrugged, grinning slyly. “Is there a problem with that, Mr. Allen?”
Kris laughed, shaking his head, smacking Adam’s thigh with his shoes. “You dork.” He glanced up just to look away giggling again, seeing Adam looking at him with a pout. “Fine, yeah.” He yelped as Adam bumped Kris with his hip, almost tipping the both of them into the water. Kris came back up with his jeans soaking wet knee up. Of course, he had to get even with Adam. They ended up both falling in, and even though Kris was soaking wet in the cold and shivering, he was laughing more than he had in a long time.
Still giggling, Adam crawled up onto his feet, helping pull Kris from the wet sand and pull of the water, and with chattering teeth and shudders ripping through the both of them they made it back to the road. “Okay…” Adam licked his laps, laughing a little and gathering Kris close as they shivered more. “Maybe not the best idea to send our taxi away.”
Kris snickered, shaking his head against Adam’s chest. “Maybe not.” He sighed and looked up at Adam. “Next week after work is great.”
“Hmm?” Adam looked down at him, and Kris felt a hand snake into his damp hair, dull nails scratching lazily at his scalp. Mmm, feels good. He closed his eyes, letting out a little groan and burying himself a little deeper into his new-found home. He couldn’t even care that he was thinking things like that about Adam anymore; the chill of their damp clothes and the warmth from Adam’s body, Adam's humming vibrating in his chest and against Kris skin.
I wonder… Kris lifted his head, opening his eyes just wide enough to see Adam’s lips. Before he could stop himself, he tilted his head up, pressing their lips together lightly. As soon as they touched, Kris felt like he’d been shocked, Adam’s lips feeding him an electric current he couldn’t get enough of. He lifted his arms behind Adam’s neck, pulling himself up for more, and with that little gesture Adam seemed to go crazy. Large hands gripped at his hips, pressing bruises in that Kris accepted just as happily as they brain-frying kisses. He moaned as Adam’s tongue darted across his lips and opened up.
But as quickly as things had escalated, Kris remembered. He pushed Adam back, sucking in air find the words to explain as Adam stared at him in confusion. Kris swallowed, shaking his head. “I can’t do this.” He looked into Adam’s eyes, looking away just as quickly as he felt that piercing-into-his-soul gaze, making him feel like he was a man on fire. “I… I should give him another chance, at least.”
A few, agonizing seconds of silence stretched between them, then Adam was releasing him. He gazed up cautiously, just enough to tell if Adam was angry or not. Instead, he saw a guilty expression on Adam’s face, blue eyes settled on the pavement. “R-right.” Adam sighed, pulling his cell out. “At least let me take you back to your place.” Kris nodded, watching as Adam dialed to call a cab to pick them up.
Uncomfortable silence filled the air as they waited, and Kris was feeling worse every second. He felt like he’d lead Adam on, and after he’d been so nice the entire night Kris just pushes him away after Kris was the one who kisses him. “I’m sorry.” He flinched. Digging yourself a deeper hole, there.
“It’s fine.” Adam’s voice was quiet and low but Kris couldn’t discern any kind of emotion in it. He sighed, looking away just in time for a pair of headlights to flash into his eyes. The cab pulled in front of them and Kris was glad when Adam climb back in with him. There might still be something to save. He winced as he thought about work the next day. How are we even going to look at each other tomorrow? Kris leaned to the side, letting his head thump against the window. I’m such an idiot…
When they finally got back to Kris place, he remembered Katy, too. His stomach sinking even further. How was he going to explain why he was wet and smelled of cologne he didn’t wear? He got out, closing his eyes as Adam wrapped his arms around Kris’ body, and smiling when those soft lips he was kissing half an hour ago pressed against his forehead. “I mean it, it’s fine.” Then he was alone. He opened his eyes to watch the cab disappear around the counter then drew in a deep breath, steeling himself for Katy and whatever he would find from his emailing partner.
Of course, there wouldn’t be anything until Adam got back, snatching his laptop out and, after typing out several different things, including his true identity, sending a simple email.
“I’m sorry I left you there. Something came up last minute that I simply could not back out of. I know it took you a lot to even agree to this in the first place, but I hope we can figure something out.” Adam read over the email one last time, his mind working over every scenario of what would happen when Adam revealed who he was. First, he’d have to do it in person, and in private. He’d have to make sure it’s the right time, too. He smiled as he remembered how Kris had surprised him, when they were just walking down the street and suddenly there were the softest lips against his. So at least I know he feels something for me. Adam chuckled, pressing the send button and getting up to shower and put his ocean-wet clothes in the washer. He’d have something figured out. And if everything worked out right, he’d have both Kris and his email love.
He remembered Kris agreeing to the second date on the pier, and smiled. Oh yes, Adam had the perfect plan to reveal just who he was to Kris.
