Sleeping In
The soft, warm light of the mid-morning sun streamed through the window, bathing Adam’s face in a wide stripe of glowing sunlight. He groaned and rubbed his eyes as he awakened to the silence of their bedroom. It was the first time in months they had both been home and able to sleep late. He smiled as he felt Kris shift gently in his sleep, pulling closer into the older man’s chest. How had he possibly gotten this lucky? Kris was perfect in every way and Adam was amazed every day that Kris loved him. A slight smile rested on Kris’ lips and Adam softly ran his fingers through the short, brunette hair. He briefly wondered what time it was, thinking he might need to wake Kris, but quickly dismissed the thought.
The door to the master bedroom of their modest house eased open just enough for Julianne, their beautiful 4 year old daughter, to peak her head through. “Daddy?” she whispered, her bright blue eyes shining. She looked just like her father - her biological father. Kris and Adam had decided that, instead of adopting a child, they wanted to have one of their own. They searched for surrogates and then, once they found one they liked, decided who would be the father with a game of rock paper scissors.
“Sshh, baby, Papa’s sleeping,” Adam whispered as Julianne tiptoed over to the bed. He ruffled her strawberry blonde hair and patted the space on the bed beside him. She climbed up and snuggled into his other side. “Good morning, beautiful,” Adam whispered, kissing her gently on the forehead and shifting slightly so that they would all be comfortable, trying not to wake Kris. Unfortunately Kris had become rather a light sleeper since Julianne’s birth and he picked his head up just slightly.
“What time is it?” Kris mumbled, squinting as his eyes adjusted to the light.
“10:30. Sorry we woke you, love.”
“Is ok,” Kris responded, sitting up just enough to take in the scene. “Morning sweetheart,” he added to Julianne. Adam pecked him on the lips and then tightened his hold around his daughter.
“So, what’s on the schedule for today?” Adam asked his family. His heart swelled at the thought - he had a family. He had a beautiful, happy, supportive family. Everything was perfect.
“Do you have to leave, Papa? Daddy?” Julianne’s eyes were wide with sadness, obviously not wanting the moment to end.
“No, Julie, we have the day off for once,” Kris replied, chuckling quietly at the large smile that spread across her face.
“I have an idea, Krissy,” Adam said, looking between the two.
“What is it?” Julianne and Kris looked at him expectantly.
“Let’s just stay right here all day.” They smiled and snuggled in closer.
