If There's A Rocket Tie Me To It

Chapter Seven: Maybe, We Were Made For Each Other

Adam's hand reached out across the bed searching for the body that had lay tangled in his the night before but it was missing and he should have known better than to let the panic set in. He refused to open his eyes, he had been here before maybe there would be a note on the pillow from Kris saying he had changed his mind or maybe Kris would just have left him like so many others before. His hand found the pillow on the other side of the bed and he gripped on tightly searching for something he didn't really want to find.

There was no note, so he had just left no doubt he had woken up entangled in Adam and panic had sent him fleeing from the room. He wasn't sure if he could blame Kris for feeling that way, but he had been hoping after last night Kris would have been able to tell him those fears. He sighed heavily and opened his eyes before turning to lay on his back.

The light was filtering in from the window and it was only now that he was starting to wake up more did he become more alert of the sound echoing through the room. The gush of water from the shower and Adam' computer turned on playing songs that Kris had added and insisted Adam listen to. Adam sat up in bed quickly and looked around the room frantically Kris' clothes were laying across the chair in the corner of the room, his presence still very much here.

Adam blinked and rubbed his eyes, cursing himself again for not taking off his make up from the night before. He knew he probably looked like shit but he was still trying to process the fact that Kris was hadn't made a run for it. Then he felt guilty for even thinking that Kris would do that after everything they had both said last night. He leant backwards against the wall, the pillows cushioning is back and closed his eyes again. He wondered how long they had before they needed to be at rehearsals, he didn't want to turn and look at the clock he knew it would only depress him.

He heard the shower turn off and he sat in anticipation waiting for Kris to emerge from the bathroom. He remained with his eyes closed even as he heard the door open he waited expecting to hear the sound of Kris moving around the room and getting ready but there was nothing only the soothing sounds of music filling the room.

Adam opened one of his eyes and looked in Kris direction. He was pretty sure that Kris Allen would be the death of him and as he looked in Kris direction he was pretty much okay with that. The first thing he noticed was the smile across Kris face, so content and it reached his eyes making them shine, he followed a drop of water falling down Kris neck and down his bare chest and meeting the material of the towel and it was then Adam heard a small cough from Kris and he realised he had been staring.

“Perve.”

Adam laughed and sat forward he wanted to reach out for Kris and pull him back into bed and ignore the fact that there was no doubt hundreds of other things they had to do today.

“What time is it?”

“6 ish... I've already had my morning text message from Alli telling me to wake up.” Kris was moving away from the bathroom door and towards the chair. Adam had heard what the time was but watching Kris made him seem to care less. He moved quickly throwing the covers off his body and grabbed one of Kris' hands pulling him to sit on the bed.

Adam sat with his legs crossed in front off him, hands quickly finding Kris face searching across his soft skin with his fingertips. He saw Kris open his mouth to no doubt protest but Adam quickly quietened him and covered his mouth over Kris', small delicate kisses that told Kris this wasn't up for discussion. Adam could literally feel the protesting leaving Kris body as he relaxed into the kiss, his own hands gripping into Adam' hair. He felt Kris smile against his lips and he couldn't help but do the same, they broke apart both smiling widely.

“See... that is exactly what we don't have time for.” Adam may have been able to take it seriously if it wasn't for the goofy grin on Kris face.

“When I woke up and you weren't here I thought maybe...”

“That I'd made a run for it?”

Adam nodded, he knew his expression read a little guilty and he couldn't have hid it if he tried. “Hey...” Kris hands were on his face forcing their eyes to lock. “It's why I put the music on and showered here, I didn't want you thinking that and I don't blame you for feeling that way. I've got a lot of making up to do for these past few days.”

Adam smiled and bit his lip. “Oh really? I like the sound of that.”

Kris shook his head. “I didn't mean that... but I'm sure we can arrange something...” Adam could see Kris leaning closer to him and warm hands were suddenly on his chest pushing him lightly down onto the bed and he couldn't have cared less that they really should have been getting ready or that Kris was soaking wet from his shower because Kris was laying on top of him hands grabbing at his shirt teeth gently biting his lower lip...

Adam hated cell phones. In sync his and Kris' both went off and they unwillingly moved apart searching for wherever they had left their phones. Kris was across the room and holding his phone up before Adam even got off the bed. He held it up with a smile. “Allison.”

He picked Adam' up off the cabinet in the room and his smiled faded quickly. “Danny...” He threw the phone lightly in Adam' direction and they both answered their calls, all the while eyes still looked on one another. Danny was harder to get rid of for Adam he kept answering questions and Adam didn't have an answer because he was too distracted by Kris. Finally he managed to get away with a promise to talk to him later.

Adam ran his hands through his hair and turned away to look in the mirror and he really did look like shit. How Kris had managed to keep a straight face looking at him with make up all across his face. Adam moved closer scrutinising his reflection. Then Kris was behind him two hands on his waist and turning him around, he was dressed in the trousers he had been wearing the night before and his shirt half buttoned up.

“I'm just going to get some fresh clothes and then I guess I'll meet you downstairs?”

Adam nodded and he looked down at Kris worried face with concern. “You okay?”

Kris nodded slightly. “Yeah... it's just... well I'm going to talk to Katy tonight and try and explain I guess...”

“Right.”

“I mean I feel like she deserves that much and I don't want to... the longer I leave it the more it feels like its behind her back and I know it already is but...”

Adam' hands found Kris face and held on softly. “Kris... it's okay I understand and you know I'm here whatever happens.”

“I know that.”

Kris smiled and leant up to kiss Adam softly and when he felt Kris start to pull away Adam protested and moved closer, his hands travelling round to knot in Kris hair and deepen the kiss.

When Kris finally pulled back and Adam let him, Kris was panting his face slightly flushed and Adam had to fight with everything he had not to kiss him again before he left. Their hands brushed slightly and then Kris was shutting the door behind him.

It was a pretty silly thing to do but Adam threw himself on the bed face down and screamed into the pillows. He literally felt like he was fifteen years old again and getting a boyfriend for the very first time. As he lay there he tried to focus, get up, get ready, Kris, decide what to wear, Kris, Kris, Kris...

He'd resigned himself to the fact that he would be distracted all day.

Rehearsals suddenly felt a lot happier and brighter than he ever remembered them being. He think what made the whole experience more enjoyable was that he could look at Kris as much as he liked without feeling pain or getting a dark glare back at him. Unfortunately doing just that had made him miss a lot of his cues and stumble over various times resulting in everyone else giving him the knew nickname Gokey. Danny had just smiled and stated that at least it was someone else screwing up worse than him. Adam had punched him on the arm and felt very satisfied when Danny winced in pain.

After that he had decided to stay at the back with Danny which in normal circumstances would have been perfect, but the last time he had done this was when Danny barely registered his existence and now that they were somewhat... friends? He found himself laughing along to Danny' crappy jokes and how he always managed to hit himself or someone else while practising the dance steps.

The loud sound of relief that left Danny when the choreographer announced a break was hilarious and he was literally running towards the bench just so he could sit down. He held back as the rest of them moved to sit with Danny, meeting Kris face with a smile waiting for one to be returned and it was there a small cautious grin but there was something hiding beneath the surface that bugged him. He held hold of Kris arm as he tried to move past Adam.

“Hey...” Adam turned Kris body to turn and face him. “You okay?”

Kris nodded and took a gulp of his bottle of water. “Yeah, just tired. I'm really starting to hate this choreographer.” He smiled again and this time it seemed genuine but as Kris turned away Adam was still unsure and he sat closely at Kris side when they joined the others.

He stole Kris water and took a sip sticking his tongue out as Kris began to protest. The rest of them were chatting and laughing about Adam' unusual lack of co-ordination but he was barely aware of them as he watched Kris laugh along.

“We should do something tonight...” Matt' voice boomed over everyone else and Allison' face was already lit up with excitement.

“How about we have one night where we don't?” Adam laughed slightly as Danny spoke from his lay down position on the bench.

“Oh sorry Grandpa if it's too much you can stay in tonight.”

“You know Danny has a point, no wonder why we're all so tired when we stay up half the night.” Adam knew his words were killing any excitement radiating from Allison but before he could talk to her Matt was stood up.

“Well... Adam agreeing with Danny. Ain't that sweet?”

Danny' voice was quiet but amused. “Get over it Giraud.”

Matt held his hands up in protest. “Hey! I think it's great that the two of you have finally decided to own up to those feelings...”

Everyone was laughing along and Adam couldn't help but join in, his good mood and the ridiculous way in which Matt was declaring it to everyone only fuelling the laughter on.

“Please...” Again Danny' voice was quiet with tiredness but Adam couldn't hear a sound of any hostility or bother about Matt talking like that, something which he was fairly sure Danny would have been awkward about, just another thing that Danny had surprised Adam with.

“You've got to admit though Danny it's pretty weird how all of a sudden you seem to care so much about Adam.”

It was strange but Adam hadn't noticed Kris' reaction to the conversation, because he just assumed Kris would have laughed along because that's just how he was. But the tone in his voice held no humour and the glare he was throwing in Danny' direction was anything but amused. It wasn't something that the others could ignore either and they all seemed to be looking back and forth between Kris and Danny who was now sat up looking at Kris.

“I'm sorry?” Danny didn't exactly sound surprised, so maybe he had seen this coming Adam couldn't be sure but he really wished that it would stop right now.

“I just think it's strange that up to three days ago you couldn't give a shit about Adam, you barely even registered him as being here and now you two are suddenly best friends.”

Everyone was looking in Danny' direction now, all except Allison who sat with her hands in her lap staring down at them. The thing that read across all their faces was that Kris was telling the truth, and curiosity had grabbed hold of them.

Danny shrugged his shoulders. “Oh I don't know maybe it's cos the one friend Adam had here who he thought he could talk to decided to act like an ass hole so maybe I thought I'd try and be a friend.”

“Right... after months of acting like a dick you suddenly decide to act like you give a fuck.”

The anger behind both of their voices was growing now and Adam wanted to pull Kris out of this and ask him what the hell his problem was.

“At least I was there for him you fucking coward...” Danny was standing up now and Kris was rising to meet him and Adam watched as everyone descended around them bridging a gap.

“Who the hell are you calling a coward? You don't know anything about me. When have you ever shown even the slightest bit of interest in any of us? You've always been so self involved and so focused on getting whatever you could so for you to act like you care now is bullshit...”

The words were flying out of Kris mouth and a few days ago Adam might have even agreed with him, he could see the faces of the others around him doing just that but the expression across Danny' face was like someone had just punched him in the stomach.

“You don't know anything about me...” His voice was quiet and hurt and Adam wanted to move towards him but he felt rooted to the spot.

“Oh that's Danny... tell your little sob story and make sure no one forgets...” And that was it Danny was fighting past Anoop and Matt his only target Kris, fists ready meet whatever part of Kris body he could find and instinct kicked in and Adam moved quickly to protect Kris from whatever Danny had to throw.

But Adam felt himself being pushed aside and Kris was past him crashing into Danny and his body hit the floor and he had no idea what was happening as he watched a mass of people huddling around desperately trying to pull the two of them apart. Then he heard the sound of someone crashing to the ground and Danny fell, his hand covering his face groaning in pain and suddenly Lil was at his side and now Anoop and Matt had hold of Kris.

Lil was pulling Danny up from the floor begging Anoop to help her get Danny out of here. He caught Danny' eyes as he left and he was sure he could see concern and confusion and Adam suddenly felt torn because he had no idea why any of this had happened. He was up on his feet, anger pushing him to where Kris was standing.

“What the fuck was that?”

Matt had let him go and was sitting with Allison who seemed to have tears in her eyes but all Adam was aware of was Kris.

“He was pissing me off all right? He has been for days acting like the two of you are best friends or something.”

“He is my friend Kris.” He emphasised the word for Kris benefit but he really was beginning to wonder of this whole thing wasn't going unnoticed by everyone else.

Kris was shaking his head and brushing past Adam but Adam was quicker and he turned gripping on to both of Kris arms. “Don't walk away from I want you to explain to what that was.”

Kris looked around the room with anxious eyes, clearly taking in the faces of the others in the room and Adam looked around with him, understanding that he didn't want to do this here. Finally Kris met his eyes and Adam could see it there clearly now, the jealously that had been running through him and how ridiculous it was, the regret for it all and Adam wanted to pull him in closer but the audience stopped him.

Kris was struggling against Adam's hands and as much as he wanted to hold on, he let go and Kris was rushing out the studio leaving Adam with a room full of questioning faces.
