Disclaimer: No I don't know them and this never happened, or isn't going to. Damn I wish I was going to their concerts, anyone got extra tickets?
Warning: Angst
Kris was extremely nervous. He hadn't seen Adam in a few weeks but it felt like forever. He saw them in the distance. Adam, Matt, Anoop, Allison, most of them were gathered at the front of their tour bus.
He smiled and waved at all of them. He jogged forward and enveloped every one of them with a hug. His hug with Adam was different, a little strained, a little fake. Adam's smile looked a little put on as well.
Kris kept smiling as he walked past them and entered the bus. He quickly walked to the end of the bus and put his luggage beside a bunk bed. He lay down on the bottom bunk, closing his eyes and trying not to think of Adam.
He knew the effort was futile the moment he opened his eyes and saw that Adam had claimed the top bunk of the very same bunk bed. His mind flashed back automatically to that hilarious US Weekly interview and all the moments with Adam after that. One in particular stood out in his mind. As he closed his eyes again, the memory of that night came flashing back, the night when that fight had taken place.
"Kris?" Katy said.
"Yeah?" Kris snapped. Did he really need this right now? He knew he wasn't being the perfect spouse. It was hard enough trying not to miss Adam without trying to be all lovey-dovey towards his wife. Not that he didn't love her, of course he did, he was just trying to convince himself that he'd made the right choice choosing this. And he needed some alone time to do that, which unfortunately Katy didn't seem to get.
"Did you see this? Adam's dating someone. Do you know who he is? The tabloids say his name is Drake LeBry."
"Yeah," Kris grunted. "He was there every week for the taping, don't you remember? I met him. Adam ended it though, about a month before the finale. They're just friends now."
"Umm, Kris, I don't think so," Katy said, seeming surprised that her husband didn't know about Adam's relationship. "Apparently, he stepped out with him yesterday night. That's what the tabloids are saying."
"What?! Are you serious?" Kris replied, and coming up behind her to read the trashy online tabloid she was reading. He finished reading it in a couple of minutes and felt bile rising up in his throat. He swallowed and steadied himself. So fast? Kris thought to himself.
Suddenly, his wife burst out laughing. He followed her eyes and read the comment that said, "Really Adam? I thought you had better taste than to date a 80s porn star! Just kidding, I love you Glambert!!"
Somehow, Kris felt a little better after that. Nobody had ever said he looked like a porn star.
The memory wouldn't stop, try as Kris might.
The call came after midnight. Kris was expecting it. After all, he and Adam had talked almost every night since they had stopped doing interviews together and were promoting the tour.
"Hey, K," Adam said into the phone. And for one second, Kris almost forgave him. But he couldn't. He had to ask him.
"So I heard you're with Drake again?" Kris replied without any further small talk, an edge to his voice.
"Yeah," Adam sounded surprised. "We just went for a date."
"Right. Oh right, I'm sorry, I must've totally imagined the day you told me you broke up with him and wanted to be with me because you were in love with me. I must've because look at you, you moved on fast."
"Kris," Adam whispered. "He asked me out on a date, and I figured there wasn't any harm in going out. I needed to do SOMETHING to distract me, to stop me from thinking about YOU."
"Yeah well, you looked pretty cosy, holding hands and smiling. It looks like you weren't really in love with me after all, huh?"
"Don't you dare," Adam whispered, now with a dangerous edge to his voice. "Don't you dare try to justify your choice by saying I never cared about you. I've been in love twice, Kris. Twice in my entire life and you were one of them. YOU chose Katy. You went back to her. And I completely understand. But don't you dare. Don't you dare pretend like I didn't have my heart broken when you left."
Kris's heart constricted. Did he really make the right decision? Would he ever know? He was just trying to do the right thing. But there was no going back now.
"I left a couple of weeks ago, Adam," Kris's voice was climbing in volume, he was almost shouting at Adam. "You could have at least waited a while before subjecting me to this! I didn't need to hear how you went clubbing with this guy, this guy that you supposedly broke up with. And before you say anything, just know Adam, that you weren't the only damn one with a broken heart!"
"Kris," Adam whispered soothingly, trying to diffuse the situation. It was so weird, Adam being the calm, collected one while Kris almost lost it like a jealous child. "Kris, I'm sorry. Okay? I'm sorry. But you have to know, even talking to you.... it hurts me, Kris, to know that we came so close but never really made it."
"Okay, Adam," Kris replied, his voice shaking. " Okay, maybe the solution is to just not talk to each other. I mean, God knows I would never want to hurt you," Kris replied, a sarcastic tone in his voice.
He slammed down the phone. He stared at the TV for a moment, and a tear ran down his face. He'd never known he could be so cruel, especially to Adam. But the throbbing in his heart that hadn't stopped since he had seen the pictures of Adam and Drake had now faded a little, and for that he was extremely grateful.
Kris opened his eyes and stared at the top bunk. This was going to be a long tour.
Hey guys, thanks for all the encouragement in my last post. Sorry for all the flashbacks, it was supposed to be more to this chapter, but the flashback just took a life of its own and became really really long. So I'm saving my ideas for the next chapter, if you want it.
Comment!! I love the criticism. Should I continue this? Give me your two cents please. Love you guys. =D
