Little Kris Allen squats in the sandbox, plastic bucket full of dinosaurs clutched protectively between his tiny hands. He cautiously looks around the playground and when he sees none of the other kids coming to bother him he falls to his butt and spreads his legs out in front of him. His mommy waves to his from one of the park benches where she is talking to some other kid’s mom.

After sending small wave her way, he turns his attention back to his dinosaurs and dumps them in the sand between his legs. He pushes the toys around, making noises when the bigger dinosaurs attack the smaller ones, and giggling when the baby dinosaurs got buried in the sand. He lets his imagination run wild and he doesn’t realize that other kids are staring at him until one of his toys goes flying through the air and landing outside the sandbox.

“Hey!” he protests and looks up to see who kicked it. He shoves his glasses farther up his nose and that earns him a laugh from some big burly kids that’s probably too old to be playing on the playground anyway. “What’d you do that for?”

The kid rolls his eyes and picks up Kris’ favorite dino, the one that looks like Little Foot. Kris pouts and reaches for the dino with grabby fingers. “What’s your name kid?”

“I’m not telling you,” Kris sticks his tongue out and the bigger kid laughs loudly.

“Whatever.” The kid kicks sand in Kris’ direction before taking off across the playground with Little Foot.

Kris’ bottom lip trembles and big fat tears fill his eyes. His mommy crouches down in front of him and brushes the sand off his clothes. “What happened, sweety?”

“That big kid tooks Little Foot,” Kris sniffles and crosses his arms over his chest and pouts. A tear slides down his dirty cheek and he wipes it away before she can.

“I’ll take you to the store and you can buy yourself another one,” she suggests with a kind smile. Kris shakes his head and shoves a t-rex across the sand just for spite.

“I don’t want another one! That’s the one Daddy gave me for my birthday!” Kris wails and cries into his hands. She sighs but pats his head and tells him that they’ll be leaving in a little while. He watches her walk away and sniffles again.

He can only stare at the mass of dinosaurs laying in the sand. He reaches for one but a shout gets his attention. He looks around the playground until he finds the source of the noise. The big kid is on the ground and some blonde boy is standing over him. Kris can see Little Foot dangling from the blonde kid’s hand. A few others run up to the big boy on the ground and the blonde kid says something before walking off.

Kris turns his head to make it look like he wasn’t watching. But then a minute later there’s a shadow cast over him and he glances up to see the blonde kid standing there. “Hi,” he waves and gives Kris a toothy grin.

“Hi,” Kris waves back. He doesn’t smile, though. His mommy always told him to be aware of strangers.

“What’s your name kid?”

“Kris Allen, with a K. Who are you?” Kris clamps his mouth shut the moment he realizes he just gave his name to someone he doesn’t know. He may be five but he’s not stupid.

“I’m Adam Lambert. Eight years old and loud and proud!”

Kris stares with an odd expression on his face. Adam seats himself in front of Kris and then holds his hand out. Kris lets out a squeal of excitement at the sight of Little Foot. So this kid is nice. “Thanks, Adam.”

“No problem. Sarver doesn’t know how to quit picking on….how old are you?”

Kris says “Five,” but accidentally holds up four fingers. Adam giggles and nods his head. “I don’t like him,” he adds and points to the big kid now chasing after a toddler around the swings. Adam agrees with a smile.

“So Kris with a K. Can I join you?” Adam asks and Kris stares a little longer. Adam has a lot of freckles, a lot of freckles. He’s wearing a baggy t-shirt and shorts that stop below his knee. “Hellloo?”

“Um, sure,” Kris smiles and unburies the dinsosaurs. He pushes some to Adam and together they set up a scene of the good guys against the bad guys with the babies as bait. Kris finds it funny as their dinos “battle” and “roar” but he also finds himself having fun. He was hoping that today at the playground he would be left alone.

But because of some plastic dinosaur that resembles Little Foot Kris ended up having more fun at the playground than he would’ve had if he had been alone.
