Author’s Note: This is completely in reaction to tonight’s performances and is a bit of fic therapy. This is my first time writing RPS and my first time writing Kris/Adam so I hope this is good, especially since I have admired so many of the fics here. This is in no way Danny friendly, while I hope he is a good person this is my fictional take. Enjoy and let me know what you think.
“What the fuck Gokey?” Kris breathed out harshly once they had entered the mansion his hands balled into fists at his side. He wasn’t the type of person who had outbursts, he didn’t vent his anger, he didn’t shove smug bastards.
He wanted to.
“What?” Danny tried to plaster on a smile, trying to seem unassuming and kind.
Kris just shook his head his body vibrating with anger “What was that out there? We didn’t practice that, you did that shit on purpose, you screwed me over to make yourself look better.”
When they had found out they were doing duets Kris had been okay with the fact that they had paired him with Danny. Adam and Allison were going to kill it but he figured he could figure out an arrangement that would work out beautifully, and he had. Even without dress rehearsal he had been confident in what they had worked out together.
What they had been performed tonight had been nowhere near what they’d been practicing. Danny had started hitting a different range and Kris had strained to keep up, to make the performance sound solid and keep it all together on his own.
Kris could feel Adam close behind him the taller man’s arm slipping comfortably around his shoulder and he wanted to lean into him, he wanted to let Adam make everything go away but he couldn’t. It wouldn’t change what had happened and he couldn’t get over the lump in his throat and the burning in his eyes.
“I’m sorry Kris.” Danny said softly still trying to smile and sounding anything but “You heard the judges though, I was better out there, I wasn’t trying to make you look bad.”
Kris threw Adam’s arm off him angrily not even realizing that the older man had been trying to restrain him and stood up angrily to Danny. His height disadvantage didn’t matter, not when the helpless rage he was feeling paled in comparison to that. “I thought we were friends.” Kris lowered his voice dangerously his words sharp with scorn “I forgot this was a fucking competition, but you obviously didn’t.”
He felt Adam reach for him and this time he let himself be pulled back against Adam’s chest his arm going from his shoulders to around his waist and Adam’s chin resting against the top of his head. Kris’s eyes just remained locked on Danny’s, catching every change and nuance.
Danny was still trying to look innocent, clueless, like the loveable klutz that was winning over America. Kris still saw the way he flinched when Adam leaned down close to whisper soothing words in Kris’s ear. It made sense now, the article and it’s “close source”.
“Kris, I know your upset, the judges were harsh man but I didn’t…”
Allison snorted interrupting him were voice filled with a level of sarcasm only a sixteen year old could manage “Yeah, sure.” She brushed by Danny not even looking him and her eyes were soft as she approached Kris and Adam. “I’m going to bed guys.” she burrowed into the both of them fitting herself in the juncture made by Adam and Kris’s bodies and Kris could see the smudge of mascara by her eyes. Eyes that were tired, annoyed, and happy all at once.
“Get some sleep tonight Krissy.” she whispered in his ear using Adam’s name for him and he tried to give her a smile, he really did but she just squeezed him tighter and he felt the tightness in his chest loosen just a little.
He watched her go her back still to Danny.
“We should get to bed too.” Adam announced his voice flat and Kris could feel his eyes locked on Danny’s as an edge entered his voice “You know, together. “ Adam’s hand slipped down into his as he moved to stand beside Kris and he brought Kris’s hand up to his mouth as he pressed a soft kiss to it.
“Sleep well Danny boy.” there was a bite to Adam’s voice that Kris had never heard and he let Adam pull him away from the other man and in the direction of the basement where their rooms were. One of them with a bed shoved up against the wall and Kris’s guitar and piano in the middle of the floor, the other with a bed that they had forgot to make this morning, like every morning
Once they were in the room Adam was pushing him to the bed using his weight to push Kris down onto the mattress his thighs slipping over his legs as he straddled him. His eyes stared down at Kris his eyeliner smudged a bit from the long day and his voice was soft “Stop thinking about it, everything will be okay.”
Kris looked up at him his head resting against the pillow and his body feeling heavy with the strain of the day, with the stress. It had taken everything he had just to get through his solo performance, he had nearly killed himself with the effort to deliver it and still stand in front of the judges and listen to their words.
“Hey, hey” Adam’s voice broke through his thoughts and he focused his eyes back on the man above him letting himself fell the warmth of the other’s body surrounding him “stop thinking; everyone knows they were just doing what they were told to. Their words don’t mean anything.”
“Yeah they do.” Kris declared softly and his throat tightened as he fought back the sting in his eyes, as he focused on Adam.
“Yeah well I think they’re idiots, they didn’t even say anything about what I was wearing tonight.” Adam grinned down at him and Kris couldn’t resist the small smile that slipped onto his lips. “Besides you were good tonight, not great but you were a lot better than Mr. Penis Envy, honestly the boy is trying way too hard to be me.”
Kris laughed his body shaking slightly as he rolled his eyes and the smile on his lips grew as he felt Adam’s fingers begin to trace his sides. “No,” his voice was soft and tired “he’s really not you.” His words were filled with honest affection and he relaxed further into the mattress feeling at peace since the first time after he had stood on that stage.
He felt his phone vibrate in the pocket of the worn jeans he had changed into and before he could get it Adam’s hand was working its way into his front pocket and pulling it free. “It’s Katy.” Adam told him the smile still in place and he flipped it open “Hey Katy girl.” His other hand was still stroking Kris’s side as he talked to Kris’s wife “No, he’s doing better now, I think he’ll be fine. Tell Mama Allen to stop worrying, I got him.” Adam laughed the sound clear and there was the same affection in his voice that was there when he talked to Allison “You know I’ll take good care of him. I’ll make sure he gets some sleep tonight, now don’t go doing that honey, you know they’ll frown if you maim a contestant.”
Kris closed his eyes just listening as Adam assured his wife that he’d be fine. He had settled down with Katy in the truest sense of the word, he had settled for her. They cared for each other, they were content, but Adam had come along and his life had just been filled with so much more.
Katy, surprisingly, hadn’t minded. Heck, she had been happy for him. She had told him later that she’d known since he had come out of the golden ticket that she was going to lose him, and she had been okay with that.
The people that weren’t okay with that were the producers of American Idol and apparently Danny Gokey.
Kris heard the snap of the phone closing and his eyes opened slowly filling heavy enough that he had to blink a couple times. Adam still concerned but his smile was warm as he set Kris’s phone down on the table by the bed and reached up to run his fingers through Kris’s hair. “Time to get to sleep Krissy, got a big day tomorrow.” He didn’t skirt around the issue but there was strength in his lips as he leaned down to press them against Kris’s words whispering across his mouth “I’ll be right there with you.”
