"Oh my god, why is Mrs. Rose still teaching? It's the last day before summer break." Kris half-nodded at Katy in agreement, his attention fixed on the parking lot and freedom. Only another half hour and he was home free. The summer before his senior year. "Are you even listening to me? Kris!"
"Miss O'Connell." Mrs. Rose's tone was severe and Katy froze, a grimace passing her face. "Did someone change the last day of school and not inform me? Because the last time I checked we still had about thirty minutes left before you're done."
"Sorry, Mrs. Rose," Katy muttered, settling back into her desk. She shot a glare in Kris's direction and he fought back a laugh. Yeah, he was ready for summer.

"KRISTOPHER!" He stopped in his tracks and turned around at the sound of the loud voice behind him. Adam hurried over to him, a giant grin on his face. "We did it!"
He couldn't help but smile at his best friend's enthusiasm. Adam was a senior and after he stepped out of the doorways this afternoon, he never had to come back if he didn't want to. Kris envied him that. As the two of them made their way to Kris's locker for the last time, Adam rambled on about his final class and the party they'd had and the food they'd eaten and how he wished Kris could have seen the look on Mr. Rolland's face when Bridget ate the entire slice of pizza in under a minute. Listening to him talk, Kris felt a sort of empty pang in his gut and he swallowed hard.
Adam drifted off, giving Kris a curious look. "What?"
"Nothing, I just... I can't believe you're graduating in a week." He was hoping for excited and maybe proud, but ended up sounding somewhere between lost and nostalgic.
Adam picked up on it instantly, a slight frown tugging at his mouth. "Hey, come here..." He wrapped his arms around Kris, pulling him into a tight hug. "It's just LA. I'll get rich and famous in no time and then I can fly you out whenever you miss me, alright?"
"Promise?" He hated how hopeful he sounded.
"I promise." Adam's voice was soft and sincere, ghosting just above his ear. Like magic, all Kris's worries disappeared and he let out the breath he didn't realize he was holding.
Adam stepped back and held him at arm's length. "We should celebrate. What about Magic Springs this weekend? One last party?" Kris grinned at him and nodded. "Great!"
Adam turned to Kris's locker and put in the combination, flinging it open and grabbing Kris's lone messenger bag from the bottom. "Let's get the fuck outta here, shall we?" He slammed the door shut with a flourish and snaked his arm around Kris's shoulders, bumping their hips together. "Come on, I'll let you drive me home."

"It's not a date, why are you freaking out about what to wear?" Katy was always so matter-of-fact and usually it was endearing and helpful. Right now, however, it was really annoying and he wanted to kick her out of his room, while he sorted through every article of clothing in his closet in a panic. "It's Adam. You've seen him every day of your life for the last ten years, give or take a vacation or two. Pick out a plaid shirt and some shorts and get going."
Kris looked at her helplessly and her eyes widened comically with realization. "Oh my god... you like him, you like Adam!" Kris groaned and fell backwards on his bed, effectively crushing every bit of plaid he owned. He'd never told anyone about his crush on Adam, not even his journal or his guitar. His sort-of-ex-girlfriend-turned-just-friends was not the first person he planned to tell, even if he didn't really tell her; it was more like she just guessed. "Oh my god! So... wait, is this a date?"
"No..." He was pretty sure he sounded wistful and he wanted to punch himself in the face. He sounded like a teenager girl. Heck, he felt like a teenage girl.
"But you want it to be." There was that matter-of-fact tone again.
He buried his face in his hands and mumbled, "I don't know, I guess." The room was absolutely silent for what felt like an hour. Kris was afraid she was going to run off and tell all of her friends and they'd tell Adam and then he'd have to move to another country to avoid the embarrassment that waited for him when Adam found out about this pathetic crush.
Then, Katy stood from her chair and shoved Kris to the side, riffling through his clothes. "Here." Rolling over, he saw she was holding out a tight black t-shirt he'd never worn before - where did she even find that? - and a pair of khaki shorts. "Wear these. Trust me."
He gave her a look, but she gave him a tougher one, and so he took the clothes, pulling her into a hug and burying his face in her hair. "Thanks, Katy."

"Oh my god, I thought you were never going to get here!" Adam hopped in the passenger side of Kris's car, slamming the door shut and promptly resting his feet on the dashboard.
Kris rolled his eyes, swallowing the lump in his throat. "Buckle up, rockstar. I don't need you breaking you neck on the way there." Adam flashed him his biggest, brightest smile but followed his instructions.
Kris backed the car out of the driveway, glancing over and noticing Adam staring at him. He tightened his grip on the steering wheel and tried not to crash into a trash can or a lamp post. "Is that a new shirt?"
"Uh, yeah, it's uh... Katy picked it out," he stammered, keeping his eyes on the road. He was going to kill her when he got home. If he got home. At the rate he was going, he was going to pass out before they even got to the park.
"Looks good on you." Four words. Four simple, meaningless words. But Kris felt the anxiety seep out of his body at the compliment and he smiled to himself.
"Thanks."

They stood in the middle of the park, the summer heat scorching and the walkways packed with guests. It felt like a million degrees and Kris was starting to regret the whole black shirt choice. Sweat was already starting to soak through the thin fabric and it was kind of embarrassing. He took a sip of water from his bottle and then another. "Rides then food? Or food then rides?"
Adam wiped his forehead with the back of his hand and slipped his sunglasses on. "Rides then food, definitely."
Kris looked around the area. "Let's go on this one!" Kris motioned towards the wooden roller coaster to the left, a wicked grin on his face.
Adam shook his head. "No. No way. That thing looks like it should be condemned!"
"It's such a rush, come on. It's so fun." Kris crossed his arms over his chest and gave him a disapproving glare. "You are such a baby." Leave it to Kris to play up to Adam's daredevil side. But no, not this time.
"I hate roller coasters." Adam knew he was whining but he didn't care. Everyone thought he was completely wild and reckless, but roller coasters? Not his thing.
Kris squinted slightly, eyeing Adam carefully and then switched tactics. His bottom lip came out in a pout and he gave Adam his best puppy-dog-eyes and instantly, he felt his resolve weakening. "Please? For me?" Kris reached out to grab his hand, tugging him in the direction of the entrance to the Arkansas Twister. Even the name sounded dangerous. Fuck.
Adam sighed and allowed himself to be pulled into line. "You owe me. Big time." Then Kris smiled, his whole face lighting up and his eyes crinkling in the corners, and Adam thought they were even.
The wait took ages. Adam was kind of hoping that Kris would get bored and want to leave before they got to the actual ride, but it seemed that every time the line moved forward, Kris's excitement just shot through the roof. "You're gonna love it," he assured, leaning against Adam's side.
"Mhm..." He attempted aloofness, but wrapped his arm around Kris's shoulders and gave him a squeeze.
Kris sighed quietly, pressing his face into Adam's shoulder. After Kris got over his awkward, internal I-want-this-to-be-a-date-but-he-doesn't-know-I-like-him monologue on the car ride over, everything had felt so comfortable and easy. He and Adam were best friends and had been since the day that Adam's family's mini-van pulled down West Oak Street looking for "the best place to eat in this town!" when Kris was only seven years old. Adam had hopped out of the van, spotted Kris sitting on the bench in front of the shopping plaza and sat down next to him.
"I hate this town." They were the first words that Adam ever said to him and he probably still felt that way, ten years later.
"Why?" Kris was curious. He loved Conway; it was home.
Adam just shrugged and glanced across the street. "It's boring and hot and I miss my friends."
"It is kind of boring here, but I like it. And it's hot, but there's a pool at my house if you want to swim in it sometime..." He paused a moment and then stuck out his hand politely. "We can be friends. I'm Kris, with a K."
Adam eyed his hand warily, but shook it nonetheless. "Adam."
"We're up next." Adam's voice broke him out of the memory. He looked up at Adam and sure enough, the next car came shooting back into the loading dock, all of its passengers windswept and excited.
Kris was back to bouncing. "Look at them, look how awesome it is!" Adam chuckled and followed Kris into their seats. He tugged the seatbelt tight and let Kris pull the safety bar down over both their laps. Kris shot him a reassuring smile and reached over to slip his hand into Adam's. "Ready?"
"As I'll ever be..." The ride operator's crackly voice came over the intercom, reminding them to remove all accessories and keep their limbs inside the ride at all times. Adam tucked his sunglasses into his pocket awkwardly and then locked eyes with Kris as the ride jumped to a start. Kris squeezed his hand as they ascended the first big hill. Adam's stomach felt like it was in his throat and he closed his eyes as they neared the top.
Every passenger screamed as they sped down the first hill, the sound filling Adam's head as he held on tight to Kris and let the adrenaline fill him. And then it was all over. They were back at the loading dock, their hearts racing, their blood pumping. Their hands were sweaty but Kris didn't want to let go of Adam just yet. The operator unlocked their safety bar and thanked them for riding The Twister, have a good day.
Everyone was exiting, so Kris dropped Adam's hand reluctantly to undo his seatbelt. He was a bit shaky and he tried to blame it on the ride, even though he'd been on it hundreds of time since he was tall enough to. Adam nudged his arm as they made their way through the exit gates. He glanced over and Adam gave him a stupid grin. "Can we do it again?"

"Okay, time to pay up, Kristopher." They'd stopped for food finally, as the sun was beginning to set, both of them grateful for the minor relief from the heat.
"Hmmm?" He looked up from his fried dough, powdered sugar smeared around his mouth.
Adam snorted and passed him a napkin. "My turn to pick the entertainment." He pointed away from the restaurant.
Kris wiped his face clean and turned to see where Adam was pointing, his eyebrows raising in disbelief. "The Ferris Wheel? Really? Wow, how rockstar of you." A smirk fixed itself on his lips, the teasing coming naturally.
"Shut up, I love the Ferris Wheel. When you're done making a fool out of yourself trying to eat your food, I insist we ride it."
"Alright, I do owe you..." The two of them made their way over, the line almost non-existent this late at night. They fell into a comfortable silence, the hum of the park filling the space between them. When the operator motioned them forward, they settled into a car across from each other, their knees touching.
Moments later, the wheel lit up in bright lights and they were moving. They circled a couple of times and then stopped about two-thirds of the way up and Kris looked out over the park, amazed at how beautiful it looked. He peered over at Adam, who was equally awestruck, and was hit with a sudden wave of sadness.
"I'm gonna miss you so much," he whispered, not even sure Adam could hear him. But Adam met his eyes and he moved to Kris's side of the car without a word. It rocked a bit, but it was nothing compared to the whirlwind taking place in Kris's stomach right now. The car steadied itself out and then Adam leaned in, carefully and deliberately. He pressed his forehead to Kris's and rested his hand gently against Kris's cheek.
Kris swallowed hard and blinked slowly, feeling a bit lightheaded from the intensity in Adam's eyes. They were wide and bright and blue and Kris had seen them a million times but he'd never seem them like this. The pupils were wide and dark and he could feel Adam's chest rising and falling rapidly.
Adam wet his lips. "You look amazing tonight," he breathed against Kris's mouth and then they were kissing. Kris wasn't sure what he expected his first kiss to be like, but hundreds of feet above the ground, bright lights flashing in every direction, hot and sweaty and pressed against Adam sounded really close to perfect right now. He opened his lips slightly and Adam took the initiative, his tongue sweeping inside Kris's mouth easily. It was messy and warm and hot and Kris never wanted it to stop.
The ride jolted to a start and Adam jumped back, returning to his side of the car quickly, his eyes wide with... fear? Regret? Kris felt his stomach twist up and he wanted to cry. The air felt electrified this time, the silence no longer comfortable. The ride finished its cycle and when it reached the bottom, they left with the rest of the passengers.
They stepped out into the main fairway, both of them caught in their own minds after their kiss. Kris wanted to run, to hide. But he was frozen, not sure what to say or do. Not sure if he should pretend it meant nothing, or tell him it meant everything. Adam was leaving in two months to go to another state, another world. Without him. And Kris was scared. Scared that when Adam came back, Kris would just be a fond memory. Just one kiss on one ride in one park.
Then, Kris felt Adam slip his fingers through his and a hope fluttered up in his belly. Wordlessly, he looked over at Adam who gave him a smile but offered him no answers to his unspoken questions. Right now, that seemed okay. Returning the smile, he let Adam lead him toward the main stage where the fireworks were starting to go off and he thought to himself that this might have been the best first not-date he'd ever been on.
End.
