Poor things... Good thing for them you just happened to strike up that conversation, or they'd have died for sure. :( I kind of feel sorry for the kid, too. Coming back from a short visit to find his pets gone. But if his mom's always like that it probably won't surprise him that much.
Me personally if I ever saw that woman in the store again with her kid I would thank her for the lizards right in front of her son and just sit back and watch the storm. :P
Ugh. That kind of thing makes me ill. People like her are the reason why rescues are so overfull and why people find small animals in the street (I'm a guinea pig person myself, people dump them off constantly). There's no reason to make an animal suffer just because you find them inconvenient.
Also, she's an idiot. You don't put a hamster in a glass tank, they don't get proper ventilation.
On behalf of the Anoles I thank you. I worked for a few years in the pet store industry and the idiocy of people who bought animals with an inadequate enclosure boggled my mind. I have tales...and some quite like yours.
