PBS shows a program thats well known as "Antiques Roadshow", safe bet you've caught a show. Not a bad program, sometimes full of info, sometimes fun to watch somebodies 'treasure' be a worthless piece of crap, and shocked that something simple is uber rare ( Read more... )

General rule: if they're offering to buy, they're low-balling the price. I wouldn't go into one of those without multiple reliable appraisals on the items already in hand. Of course, I would go into one of those shows with appraisals, and subtly be very audible when they low-balled me. Popcorn optional but recommended. :)

According to an article in an AARP magazine (OK-OK, so I'm *older* than the Groatmeister---) on PBS's Antiques Roadshow, if it's one of the appraisals that they've taped for the TV show, the dealers are *forbidden* to buy those specific items. (This does *not* apply to those not filmed.) Any dealer that violates this agreement winds up in deep kimchee... };-)

Does anyone still think that PBS needs our TAX DOLLARS to support it?

Between the money from advertisers, profiteering show hosts, local station donations... why are they still getting a chunk of change from the US Government?

Their programming is liberal slanted, and the better shows end up moving to Discovery Channel or some other cable network before long with fewer restrictions on advertiser funding.

Now don't get me wrong: I think that PBS should continue, but not on the government dole. They should be 100% self-sufficient and stop using MY TAX DOLLARS to create the next generation of liberal whiners.

But that wasn't the question... Should our TAX DOLLARS be supporting those shows when PBS has so many advertisers and sponsors these days?

Sure, the advertisers don't interrupt the program, but they do make significant contributions and get their own airtime between shows in return for their money.

I say that PBS needs to be privatized. It should be run like a business, not a government body with all the red tape that entails.

Only person who has justified the existence of PBS is Ken Burns and his Civil War Doco. Which is still superior than anything History Channel has made.
