I think some people just take advantage of the others around them without realizing it..doing something like saying thank you can be a hard thing sometimes but it's so important to do! manners are such an important thing that I never really realized before feeling slighted like this.
I totally have been way more focused on that lately since becoming one of the "faceless people" that people deal with very day - bank tellers, rent-a-cops, cashiers, grocery baggers. People seem to think that they can just either completely ignore or be completely rude to people like that, and it frustrates me so much! Just because someone is in a blue-collar position where they happen to be providing a service to you doesn't make them less of a human being. We're all humans with human dignity - we deserve to be treated that way!
Like the other day I said thank you go the guard at the bank who held the door open for me, and he was completely taken aback and surprised and really happy that I'd acknowledged him and had something nice to say to him. How horrible is it that something as simple as that is a novelty for him in his job? It's just frustrating!
I try to say thank you all the time to everyone! I totally know what you mean about working a blue collar job.. I think everyone in the states should do a handful of things.. one of them is work in a retail store during the holiday season. that'll really make you think twice about where you dump your trash and unwanted things and I feel like it would help you appreciate the people who you do take advantage of (general you, not you you!) like the bank security guy.
good for you! I love it when people are respectful of their peers. without that bank security guy doing his job, your money might get stolen! at the very least, he deserves a thank you! I maintain that there are no unimportant jobs. everyone who works contributes to a more-or-less common good, and that's important.
don't worry about being a 'terrible lj friend' =) I don't consider you awful cause you don't comment or whatever, I don't mind when people don't comment. I figure if you read my journal, that's enough.

I'm with you on the manners thing. I guess I just kind of think of polite conduct as common sense but... apparently it isn't for a lot of people. :(
