Wow, that is pretty ridiculous. I can't believe he would be fired for stating something that is so obviously true. I don't think it's quite analogous to the global warming issue. Current drug policy is, for the most part, set by popular public opinion. I don't think that's really true for global warming.
I'm curious though.. even if human activity hasn't caused global warming yet, wouldn't you agree that it will? It's a physically property of gas that causes the effect.
It's possible that we could cause global warming or already be causing it. The problem is, such a small change in CO2 is being called the single reason for global warming. How do we know how much that is affecting the earth? It's not like CO2 is the single variable that affects our earth's temperature. Some papers with thermodynamics suggest that the actual effect of CO2 change would be far, far below any sort of random deviation. Just from the physical emissivity properties of CO2 do suggest the temperature will go up, but by how much, we don't know--there are far too many variables. And to claim we *do* know simply because of reliable temperature data from only the last 100 years is a bit presumptuous

I agree with you in general but on this topic I kind of feel ok about the government and media 'deceiving' the public. We are unbelievably wasteful with resources and energy. If seeing Al Gore's movie inspires people to make changed on a personal level can't you at least partially excuse it for not being built around the best science? Global warming may be the ultimate crisis caused by pollution, but there are a plethora of other problems. I really can't see how tricking people into cutting down their consumption could necessarily be a bad thing. It's almost 1984esque, but sometimes people may actually be better of by being slightly deceived

That's a very valid point, and one that I've thought of myself. Like, if global warming isn't real, and we can't tax energy, how do you get people to clean up what they're doing? Apparently the trash in the North Pacific Ocean Gyre doesn't make someone wake up someday and change their living--why? I don't know--I know I recycle all that I can (not to mention how much electricity is saved when melting down recycled aluminum), because it's pretty fucked up how much we're destroying the planet

Scary words there. I'm enough of a cynic to rarely believe much of what comes from governmental bodies, and nearly non if it hits my ears in a 'panic monger' tone or phrasing.
Do I believe that there is "Global Warming"? Yes...however, I don't buy into the 'official' line of why it's there. In that, I suppose I'm an environmental heretic.
DO I believe that many of the drugs that I'm told are so very horrible as bad as they are? No, I don't. I have smoked pot before. That was more than 20 years ago, and I'm still here, very much the sober person. I didn't get instantly hooked and a junkie. I did, however, get way too close to having an alcohol dependency at that time also. Which is more dangerous? Hmmmm...
