Update on the les mills... The class is called bodyflow, and they offer afternoon classes at the Y on Monday, tuesday and Wednesday. Per day fee to use the Y is $10. Otherwise, I can have a five day pass to use the facility, including attending fitness classes and using the pool, and the registration fee is fifty percent off until the end of august ( Read more... )

The class I will do. The membership, perhaps not.

I've got a health club membership because while our building (and the facility at work) both have lots of machines & weights & stuff, neither one permits me access to a pool.

Some health insurance plans help cover the cost of a gym membership if you go X times a month--which makes a lower fixed monthly expense, for what that's worth.

Went today for a tour. Found out that the joiners fee may be waived or paid by my insurance, and they reimburse twenty dollars a month if I go at least twelve times in the month.

Hmmm, one question I forgot to ask was about taking the kids into the pool. She made it clear that on a single membership the kids could go to the kids room for up to two hours a day, but that family memebership was required to get the reduced rate for swimming lessons. But I didn't think to ask about taking them to the pool.

Monetarily, it only makes sense to join as a family if I am going to take the boys to swimming lessons there, and as an individual if I will use it more than once a week on average. Now if my family were considered to be me, mom and the boys that would be one thing. But since she has to have a separate membership we're just stuck.

Family membership:
12 mo @ 100 (80 if we go twelve times a month) is 1200 (960) plus 40 per kid per session of swim lessons

Individual membership:
12 mo @ 70 is 840 (600), nonmember swim lessons are 100 per kid per ( ... )

Most clubs won't let the kids into the rest of the club (ie, not the "kids room" area) w/o either a) a guest pass or b) you paying something above and beyond your single membership.

I don't know that the club I go to (or some of the other ones downtown) actually have guest passes for folks who don't belong to the club. Or, I simply didn't know anyone who belonged to any of them, for it to be an option for me to go in on occasion w/o getting a membership myself. But then, I wanted to use the pool (rather than take a single specific class), so that may have been why I couldn't do what you're planning.

In your scenario, it sounds like doing the classes at a "drop-in" type attendance would be ideal between the cost & your schedule.

Turns out that the lady was mistaken. The ten dollar per class fee only applies if you are attending the class (or otherwise using the facility) as the guest of a member who has already used all their guest passes. So Michael recommends that I just try a regular yoga class at the club downtown, and I think I'll look into that before committing to anything.
