POWERMAN 5000 concert review, fool!
Yesterday after Shannon came we set off for Springfield, VA. The drive was a little slow since we ran into DC traffic on 495 and on our way into Springfield, but it was overall a relaxing ride. MUCC decided to pwn my life a little more, JUST before we got there. We were listening to Shannon's ipod on shuffle, and I was complaining about how I've been trying not to think of MUCC all day and I end up thinking about them, and for the whole drive not once did MUCC play, and she so happened to mention this little fact. So I replied, "You know, you're right. I'm gonna cry if MUCC comes on next-- no, I'm onna cry if it's FUZZ." She just laughed. The current song ended, and we waited for the next to start. Took a second, but then......
the freaking intro to Fuzz fades in.
REALLY?
REALLY?
REALLY?!?!
/cry
So we got there around 18:00 and chilled for a bit outside Jaxx, went to 7-Eleven. Around 18:30 we decide to head in. Chilled at the bar as staff milled around setting up for the show. Shannon got a Stella and I got Smirnoff Ice. A little later we both down a shot of Jäger. Shit was gooooooooood. What was also awesome was that we were sitting right behind the sound and light boards.
I, being a music/sound freak, was staring at it all googly-eyed and crying to myself. What I would kill to do that.....
We sit around bored for a little while longer until the first opening band comes on, The Rejected. They honestly weren't all that great. The vocalist's people/MCing skills were not up to par, and the fact that he was wearing a Red Skins jersey threw me off even more. His screaming wasn't phenomenal, and the energy they gave off made me want to fall asleep, even though it was loud. They played about five songs and left the stage as the next band began their setup.
Switch 56 took the stage, and the music was none too shabby, but when the vocalist started singing, I had to do an aural double take. It sounded like Nickelback. Shannon and I both weren't feeling it at all. And I absolutely LOATHED the way he played bass. It was so... unattractive, and he made it obvious he wasn't a bass player. He only played bass for a few songs that needed two guitars, where the bassist would switch. Honestly, I didn't see the point of the singer playing bass anyway since they were just root notes and he failed at it entirely. I also didn't appreciate how he thought he was hot shit just because he was playing bass (atrociously, mind you).
The last opening band, Sordid, was really good. They had a sort of Middle Eastern sound, and the vocalist was great. The guitar work was superb, right up my alley, and the bass was freaking kickass. I had a feeling he would be when I saw the Ampeg (the one that I want too -___-) and amp head being set up. Finally, a bassist that could actually play, and very well at that. He had some serious skill, and he moved around the most on stage. I liked that a lot. The entire band was animated and energetic and really got the crowd moving. I especially liked the vocals, hard metal with a hint of Middle Eastern melody. I wanted to get a CD afterward, but since they didn't have a merch table I didn't know where they were and was too lazy to bother looking. But hey, there's always myspace.
Sordid left, and the roadies set up the stage for the long-awaited headlining act. A few minutes after it seemed like everything was set to go, we expected the show to begin, but we ended up having to wait at least twenty minutes before the band finally took the stage. I was falling asleep. But when they did, it was explosive. the crowd was in an uproar as the first song kicked in.
Everyone was jumping, throwing arms and hands in the air and shouting along with Spider. At one point some guy (probably drunk) called him a pussy. Spider laughed, saying, "Oh, so I'm a pussy now? That sounds like a challenge, them's fightin' words." and they had a friendly argument before Spider high-fived him and went on with the show. He is really funny/awesome when he emcees, too. Really chill and cool dudes. They put on a great performance (not that we would expect any less from them) They played a bunch more songs, then left teh stage. A chant of "POWERMAN" started, but one guy on teh sidelines kept saying "sucks" after it and it really pissed me off because it was so goddamn annoying. But he shut up, and not long after, said band returned to the stage; this time everyone but Spider was donning really cool freaking BADASS helmets that had fucking lights and everything.
There was a mosh it that faded in and out during the show, started by the same group of guys. I was itching to get in it the whole time, but I was torn between jumping with Spider and singing/shouting. During the last song, though, I said fuck it and jumped in. Been a while since I've been in a pit. It was fun, except one guy was sweating beyond what was legal and every time I touched him it was like touching slime. Naaaaaaaasty.
After the show they had a little meet and greet and anyone who bought their latest album would be able to get it autographed, so Shannon and I decided to get the CDs. The guys were really chill, laid back, and friendly, just all around nice people. We got photos with everyone but the drummer (which I feel bad for) and when I went to pick up my CD I noticed a guitar pick on it and was like ":O!!" I had just bought one at the merch table, but it was cool because this one had a different design than the one I got.
.....lol.
All in all it was a great show, and I really had a good time. It was awesome seeing Shannon again. I got to hear awesome music and jump and headbang, I got a kickass t-shirt and CD and a free guitar pick!! I have a feeling Velkro gave it to me. It was kind of funny because I asked them to sign the actual CD and not the booklet, and they were mildly surprised XD. On the way back to my place we stopped to get food. First we went to a McDonald's in Beltsville, but it was like some shoddy ghetto-ass McDonald's with a window that looked like it had been shot at and a 24-hour drive thru that was closed off and their lobby which was supposedly open until 1:00a but was closed, though there were still people inside. So we said fuck it and searched for the Taco Bell in the area. Turns out it was a Taco Bell/Pizza Hut, and just when I thought the MUCC pwnage was over for the day I go to look at the price for the cheese pizza meal thing, and it's fucking $5.69.
REALLY?! WHO PRICES SHIT LIKE THAT?!
..... Moving on, I get a chalupa and we merrily sleepily make our way back to mine. I was nodding off the rest of the way and I was already in pain from moving around. Wtf. I didn't even do much. I guess it's just been that long, ahahahahahhaa.
So here's the crap I got:
One on the right is the one I bought; left one is the one Velkro left me
