Changes are good! It takes a lot of courage to leave a job you hate when you don't have something else lined up, so I applaud you for that. Life's too short to be miserable and atrophied.
While I'd hate for you to leave California and no longer be an easy drive from the Cabin, I think you would be happier in a low-traffic area close to lots of nature. My vote is for Oregon!
I echo Jen's sentiments: I don't want you to be farther away, but you need to be happy. And I hear you on the traffic. There's a reason why I only looked for jobs that were a 15-30 minute drive away (on surface streets).
Finally, do you realize you didn't mention WoW once in this post? WOW! ;-P

Interestingly, Carson City is less than 4 hours from The Cabin, according to mapquest.
