Chapter 1
RING.
Ugh, I so do not want to get up right now. Maybe it will stop…
…
RING.
Tina awoke to the sound of the ringing alarm clock and stared into the time it was showing. Having just woke up, it took her awhile to absorb it. It showed 12:23pm. Startled, she looked at Lori, her fraternal twin-sister’s bed. All it showed were slight bumps resembling a human body. She got into a squat position and took off leaping from her bed to her sister’s, screaming "WAKE UP!" But when she landed from her leap expecting to find a solid object she was once again startled to find that the lump was not her sister but a pile of pillows. Incredibly frustrated Tina began screaming "Lori!" and as a reply Tina heard cackles of laughter and was suddenly thrust to the floor by flying pillows.
"Do you even realize what time it is?!" Tina asked as she threw pillows in Lori's direction.
"I do," she replied. "But do you?"
"What do you mean by that?" Tina asked, confused.
"Did you even think to look at your watch?" Lori said in between laughter. The time showed 9:51.
"You idiot!" Tina screamed. "You scared the shit out of me!"
"I know, that was the fun part." Lori cackled, only to be hit in the head by another pillow.
"Come on, Lori, we have to get ready…"
"Correction," Lori interrupted, "You have to get ready-I've been ready since 8:00."
"FINE! I'll get ready and you can have the honors of calling everyone." Tina said, aggravated.
"Ugh…Whatever." Lori grumbled, and she made her way out of the room, down the stairs, and into the kitchen. Tina slumped onto the bed, thinking of her recent birthday party.
"This is a kick ass party," Lori called over from across the other side of the yard.
"Of course with Shannon and Spike here."
"Hey, Josh and Tiff are here too, ya know."
"Yeah, yeah," Tina grinned, waving her hand.
Right as she did that, she felt something soft and shiny hit her palm. She looked up quickly to find her mom stuffing the end of a dark red ribbon into her hand. The sisters looked at each other and smiled because the last time her mom did that it was there sixteenth birthday and it lead them to a new car. They cautiously followed the ribbon, unable to stop smiling. But instead of leading them to something great, it lead them to a small metal box.
Lori had glanced at Tina and raised an eyebrow. Then Tina had voiced what Lori was thinking.
"Do you think it's a trick?" whispered Tina, eyes narrowed.
Lori shrugged, and bent forward to look at it closer.
"How would I know?" She said. "Let's open it."
Tina hesitated for a second, and then un-did the metal latch with a soft 'click' and raised the lid.
"Papers!" exclaimed Lori, looking slightly flustered. "That's all that's inside? Paper?"
"Look, smart one. What do the papers say?" Tina's eyes were sparkling with excitement.
"Oh," said Lori, her eyes lighting up as well. "Oh, oh! This is better than a car!"
Tina grinned happily at her sister’s reaction. "But, Mum," She said suddenly, "This is an awful lot of, well I mean, look at how expensive all this was…."
"No worry!" Said her Mom, eyeing her daughter warmly. "This is your day. And your Father and I have worked hard to save this for you-we want you to enjoy it!"
"Aaah!, I cannot belive we're acutually going to leave New York and go to Hawaii" Tina grinned
"Wait a second "Lori started ,"six tickets"
"Well obvious we knew it would'nt be as fun for you unless your friends were there"
The twins looked at each other and...........
"Tina!" Lori screamed. Tina jolted out of her birthday flashback and began packing. Lori came stomping up the stairs.
"Are you ready yet?"
"Did you call them?" Tina replied.
"Yes." she smirked back. "They’re ready and waiting for us, the only one who's not ready is you."
"Uh-huh," Tina replied grumpily. "You know, a little help wouldn’t kill you."
"You know, it just might," Lori said, but she leaned down to help Tina pack.
"Tina, you're bringing a bag of popcorn...already popped?"
I just wanna be prepared," Tina shrugged. "There, that wasn’t so hard, see?" She motioned to her swollen suitcase. "Everything’s ready."
Lori took a deep breath and paused. "Look around, baby sis. This will be the last time we see home for two whole months."
"Hey, who you calling baby? I’m only seven minutes younger-Oof!"
Lori giggled softly. "And remember that, too."
"What, remember the last bombardment of the sky-bombing pillow attacks?" Tina pulled a feather out of her dark brown hair.
"Last of?" Lori raised an eyebrow. "You hope for too much."
Tina sighed. "I know."
"Well, come on, Mum’s waiting in the car. A bit terrified of us leaving, I think, so be, er, well-act responsible. What? Hey, don’t give me that look!"
Their mom, with tears in her eyes, drove them to pick up their friends, and then drove them to the airport. They spent ten minutes trying to get their mom to just say goodbye and leave. Then they began dodging people so they could load their baggage into baggage transport.
"This place is a zoo" Josh exclaimed as someone rammed their luggage into him. They spent an hour and a half waiting for their turn to load the luggage.
"God I hate airports" Tiffany said.
"I hated leaving my mom, she acted as if shed never see me again I mean come on I'm just going on vacation" Shannon sighed
"Mom's are like that" Tina said
"I think that was proven with my mother as we left, but dont worry you know It'l be worth it"
"Oh yea, Im going surfing" Spike said imitating a surfer.
"Like you could" Lori said ,all the girls gigled
"We live in New York, the only water you've seen is a pool" Lori chuckled.
"And your point is" Spike said.
"Alright break it up you two" Tina Said
"We half a half an hour before the plane leaves so lets just take a seat
"Everyone sat down and Lori tried to make small talk with Spike , but with no sucess. A half an hour later the four of them began boarding their private plane.
"This thing is sweet!"Josh said
"Tell me about it" Lori replied The plane was decorated purple. It had conftorble red couches with a recliner and seat belt. Next to each couch was a table full of food. Josh knelt down and grabbed a handfull of Cheetoes off the table.
"Mmm... I am loving this." Suddenly the pilot's voice echoed throughout the plane.
"Please secure your excess baggage and take your seat, the plane will take off in 5 minutes.
" Everyone did as they were told sat on the red couches, put on their seatbelts, and got ready for the long flight that would end up shorter than it should.
Chapter 2
It's been three hours into their twelve hour flight to Hawaii. They had just resently took off from there only other stop in Florida and were about to go into the Gulf of Mexico. Lori, Tiffany, Shannon and Spike were sleepin on their recliners. Tina was lieing with pillows over her ears tring to sleep over Spikes snoring, and Josh was thinking of other ways to shut him up after piling pillows on him and putting an apple in his mouth didnt work. When he woke up after suffacating with the pillows over him it wasnt pretty. Josh ended with with an enormous bruise on his arm and the plane even slightly moved a lil. The pilot heard the snoring and called them up to the front to give them ear plugs.
"Happens all the time," he chuckled
"Thank you so... much, you have know idea how much we need these!" Tina exclaimed as she handed Josh the ear plugs and ice for his arm. They soon joined the sleeping crew. With the newly acquired ear plugs, the group was soon asleep and were awoken quite rudely some hours later by heavy turbulence. Tina was sprawled over the end of the couch next to the table of food, and a bowl of cheetoes ended up landing painfully on her head.
"Ow!" she yelped, suddenly wide awake and rubbed the sore, and now very cheesy, spot. She threw the corn puffs off of her irritated, having them hit her sister in the face.
"Hey!" Lori shouted as it started raining cheesy poofs. She dusted the crumbs off her face and glared at Tina, who only continued to smile sweetly at her. Then suddenly another round of violent shaking proceeded to rock the plane, making the rest of the food go flying off the table. The turbulence got gradually worse, waking the rest of their friends up. "What's going on?" Spike questioned sleepily. Josh pulled the ear plugs out of his ears and shrugged.
"Dunno. We must have hit a rough spot."
"What are those for?" Spike asked, indicating the ear plugs that were sitting in Josh's and now Tina's lap as she pulled her own out. The two sent him a glare and Josh rolled his eyes. The pilot's voice came on the loud speaker again.
"We're experiencing minor turbulence. Make sure you have your seat belts fastened and have your chairs up right and in the locked position." The group of teenagers glanced around at the couches they were seated on and many weird looks and raised eyebrows were exchanged between them.
"Nothing to get too worried about, we'll be smooth sailing again in no time." The cabin was silent as the pilot finished his announcement and the plane rocked again violently. Tiffany and Lori tried to go back to sleep, with little success. Shannon was slouched over a bag, quite motion sick and not liking this whole ordeal so far. The two guys were having a staring contest, not going very far with it seeing as every time the plane gave a jerk they blinked, and Tina kept to herself, glancing out the window watching the sky grow darker and noticing that the shaking was getting worse. They were lucky that the couches and tables were attached to the floor, otherwise they would be flying around the cabin, the turbulence was so bad. After about another forty-five minutes of this, the pilot came back on the loud speaker again.
"This is your captain speaking. The turbulence, as you have probably noticed, has gotten worse. Nothing to be alarmed about. My co-pilot and I have everything under control, and we're going to be landing at the nearest airport to wait until the storms have cleared." Just as he said this, a large gust of wind hit the plane sending it flying and everyone crushed against a side of their seat belts. A couple of them cried out as it dug painfully into their sides. In the cock-pit, the pilots were bickering amongst themselves.
"We have everything under control, huh?" the co-pilot sneered as the steering wheels went spinning and launched them off course.
"I told you the storm was getting too bad, I told you we should have landed back there in Texas! But nooo, of course not! You never listen to me! God forbid!" he continued to rant.
"They're only kids. I didn't want to get them nervous!" the captain countered.
"You wouldn't have had to worry about them getting nervous in the first place if you let us stop!"
"It wasn't that bad back there! If I had known it was going to get worse I would have!" Another gust of wind stopped them short as the plane powerfully got sent in the other direction and started spinning. An overhead compartment in the cock-pit flew open, a trunk falling out and hitting the pilot over the head. He slumped out of his chair and hit the floor unconscious.
"Joe?" the co-pilot shouted the captain's name worriedly as he fought to stop the plane from continuing to go head-over-heels. When the captain showed no signs of stirring, an odd lump began to form in his throat as he realized he was alone for this one. Shannon desperately tried not to heave when they started turning and going upside down.
"This is going to be the death of me," she moaned. They were all holding onto the arms of the couches for dear life. The other five were yelling at each other.
"Remind me never to go on vacation with you guys again! This is nuts!" Spike said.
"Oh, come off it, Spike," Tina replied annoyed. "It's not like we were planning on this." The plane gave another violent lurch and the six of them screamed as the plane started dipping to the right and falling.
"WERE ALL GONNA DIE!" Tiffany screeched and started wailing uncontrollably. Josh frowned.
"Everyone just calm down! Sitting here whining about it isn't helping!"
"Yeah! Josh is right! If this thing is going down we gotta be prepared," Lori said then added,
"I hope we're not over water." Tina looked out the window.
"We're over water."
"WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!!" Tiffany started screaming her head off again. They all glared at her.
"Shut up!" Spike muttered. He undid his seat belt and got up.
"Are you crazy?" Tina shouted.
"Mmhum,"he mumbled in response and stepped out into the isle. A minute later, the plane made another violent jerk, and Spike was thrown to the other side of the plane and thrust against the overhead compartments. The others screamed, but after a moment, Spike calmly got to his feet and made his way back. They screamed again. His forehead was smeared with blood.
Chapter 3
"Spike!" Yelped Tina. "Sit down, you’re bleeding!"
But he shook his head. "Lori, we need to get to the captain’s cabin."
He said this so calmly, and with so much resolve, that the others wondered if maybe he had hit his head a bit too hard. Lori, however, undid her seatbelt as well and nodded.
"Lori-"
"Tina! There’s no point sitting here any longer! Like Josh said-If this plane’s going down, which it probably is, then we’re all just waiting for our doom. We need to do something!"
But Tina was shaking all over, and wouldn’t budge.
"I’m coming," said Josh stoutly.
"And we need some people to look for parachutes and stuff," said Lori authoritatively.
Tiffany and Shannon immediately stood up. "We’ll do it," they said in unison. Then they both stared at each other in wonder.
Lori turned back to Spike. "Let’s go." There was no time to ponder the sudden change in Tiffany and Shannon.
"Alright, but we need to hold on to the seats as we go. Once the plane starts rocking, you won’t know what hit you, it’s that fast."
Lori nodded, and Spike and Josh followed her lead as she walked slowly towards the front of the plane. More than once, the plane would take a dip and then swirl, as if being caught in some twirling wind. Lori would hold on to the nearest seat hard and dig her heels into the metal flooring, conscious that every time this happened, they were losing time. The plane was descending, not straight nor fast, but in drifts and long ovals; but it was still going down.
Finally, the threesome made their way to the cabin door.
"Locked!" Spike said angrily, and then began pounding on the door like a madman. "We didn’t come all the way up here for nothing! Open up! Open the damn door, I said!" The plane jerked slightly.
"STOP!" yelled Josh, motioning to Spike. "Listen."
Spike put his ear up to the door.
"What’s going on?" whispered Lori.
"Someone’s in there, there’s no way they can’t hear us," Spike muttered. "And there’s no reason to-LOCK US OUT!" he roared at the door.
A voice once again sounded over the intercom, but it was far from reassuring. "Everything is going to be fine. Please remain in you seats. I repeat, everything is going to be alright. Sit down."
"No!" This time it was Josh’s turn to be angry. The wind outside the plane howled viciously against the metal coating as he spoke. "Everything is NOT alright!"
"Spike," said Lori suddenly. "Can you rip off the arm to that chair?"
"For what?"
"No time! It gets long and narrow around the back of the chair-where it connects. At least I hope it does. Can you get it off? Quickly!"
Spike nodded instantly and went over to battle with the red armchair. A minute later he came back with a long pole that was bent at one end, and had an armrest cushion hanging droopily at the other. He handed it to Lori.
"Now what?"
"Stand back, Josh," warned Lori, as she swung the armrest around dangerously. Both boys cleared the way, and Lori hooked the bent edge in the gap between the door and its frame, and then nudged it behind the door. She ran it down the gap, stopping when the lock blocked the armrest’s path. "Help me," she muttered, as she heaved the armrest down against the lock, and Josh and Spike both ran over to struggled with it as well.
"It’s not going to-" began Josh, but as the plane began to make yet another fierce turn, he stopped in anticipation.
"Tina!" Screeched Lori, out of breath from her efforts. "Tina, we need you!"
No reply.
"Help Tina-I’m slipping!"
And she was; shoving against the lock meant that she had no free hand to steady herself. Josh and Spike were both holding on to a side chair with one hand, and holding the armrest with the other, but all Lori had was the broken armrest.
"Just let go," moaned Tina.
But Lori was now hanging onto the pole for dear life. If she let go, she would probably end up somewhere at the back of the plane.
"I can’t," Lori groaned. She hooked her left foot around the foot of the nearest chair to keep herself from drifting side to side. It put a terrible strain on her leg.
Suddenly, the plane took a gigantic dive forward, and Lori felt her head bang against the ceiling as the armrest rose to the top of the door. She looked down at the floor beneath her, noticing with a sudden panic that Josh and Spike were no longer helping her. Frantically she searched until she found something else to hook her leg around, and gripped the armrest as firmly as she could, preparing for the worst. Another gust of wind made the plane rise unexpectedly, and the force was enough to bring the armrest down so fast that-finally-the lock snapped. The door flung upon, and Lori, along with the loosened armrest, was thrust backwards. Lori didn’t have time to untangle her leg-as she flew back, she could feel her leg twisting and stretching under the strain, until finally she heard a ‘sharp’ pop, and felt with it an excruciating stab of pain. All that happened next was a blur; her leg must have untangled, because she could feel herself flying backward. If she really was, she didn’t know. All she could feel and see and hear was the popping and throbbing, and as dark spots slowly devoured her vision, she gave into them entirely and blacked out.
"Lori!" cried Tina, shaking as Lori was thrown against the back of the plane and then slid down it in a slump. Her eyes were closed and her left leg stuck out at a very strange angle. Tina yelped as she saw it.
Spike and Josh, however, didn’t waste any time. As soon as the door was open, they plunged in, knowing how precious every moment was. Screw it up, and they were done for. What it is they were going to do, exactly, they weren’t sure, as neither of them knew anything about flying planes. But at least they could talk to the pilots, and help however they could…
But as soon as they saw what the co-pilot was doing, they knew why he had locked the door. He was getting a parachute! The other pilot lay unconscious on the floor, blood dripping from his brow.
"Wha-what are you doing?" Spike breathed unsteadily. "You can’t just leave! We’re above an ocean!"
"I’d rather be eaten by the sharks then burnt alive," said the co-pilot quietly. He looked up at them with a strange glint in his glossy eyes. "This is the last one."
Both Spike and Josh were breathing very fast. Only one parachute?
"Don’t the seats have something-" began Josh desperately. The plane rumbled, as if something were tearing it through.
"No, this is a plane for comfort, not safety. I never wanted to fly this," He added, his hands shaking. "They’ve killed me!"
"Tiff and Shannon!" Spike shouted. "We found a parachute!"
"Shut up!" spat the co-pilot. "You’re not calling any of your little friends for help! You’re not stopping me!" And with that, he tore past them and to the exit. Tiffany and Shannon were making their own slow way to the cabin, just as Lori had done before…
But they were obviously too late. The co-pilot ripped open the exit door and jumped out. Tiffany started screaming like an idiot again and Shannon put her head in her hands, but only for a moment. The blast that followed from the pressurized plane cabin finally meeting the outdoor air was enormous, and no one would have been able to say anything during it.
All Spike could remember from that point on was himself being thrust to the floor, the terrible sucking sound, and the intense swirl of gray cloud from beyond the exit door. The plane was literally cracking in two, and as a monstrous crunching sound filled the air, all eyes were closed and all minds wiped. The plane was finally crashing.
Chapter 4
Tina, finally snapping out of her trance stood up from her sisters side her hair blowing from the wind of the open door. She looked outside and announced that they were no longer over water. She took charge so fast in put every one into there own small trance.
"Shannon, Tiffany"she yelled "I need you to watch over Lori" she nodded over towards her unconcious sister.
She then began her own catious way across the plane and had decided to try to pilot it.
