I don't remember science in elementry school before grade 7 - but I really liked it then! Certainly I wouldn't think of it as a 'scary' subject...

Oh, I found any science after grade 5 to be a very scary subject - at least I found chemistry and physics to be so. I was always fine with biology.

I don't remember any science before grade seven either. I think they might have replaced it with French, as was usual in our immersion class.
