You're Gonna Make Me Love You
RPF. Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart. PG. 1,631 words.
Summary: Kristen and Robert have an encounter at the Teen Vogue party.

Note: This came about from listening to The Promise by Girls Aloud on repeat for pretty much two whole days. *headdesk* Title comes from the song. :)

There was that saying that all it takes is one pebble to alter the course of a river.

Kristen had no idea why she was thinking about this while flashes were going off in front of her face, she clung close to Nikki’s side and smiled though it was the last thing in the world she felt like doing. She was wearing an uncomfortable dress and even more uncomfortable shoes and, of course, photographers and reporters were everywhere, armed with cameras and microphones and asking the same questions she had answered a million times by now.

Words like exposure and good for your career echoed in her mind. Repeated to her often by her agent, publicist, manager and even her parents. The truth was there was only one reason Kristen didn’t completely regret doing this vampire movie that was now intruding on the perfectly comfortable and low profile life she had built for herself.

Just last year, attending an event like this Teen Vogue thing was optional and not mandatory as her publicist had told her. Also last year, if she had chosen to attend this she would have breezed right by the slew of photographers and reporters while now she had to stand here and smile until she couldn’t feel her feet anymore in these death shoes. Yes, there was only one reason this was even marginally worth it and he was…nowhere in sight.

Kristen craned her neck, looking for that familiar mess of reddish-brown hair, his tall frame, the manic energy he always carried at these things. Not posing for pictures. Not talking to the MTV people. Or the magazine people. Where was he?

She caught Michael’s eye. He looked bored already. She had told him that she was fine going to this one alone. Nikki was here and practically the whole group would be here but he had insisted on coming along. Kristen sighed. Last year she would have thought this was sweet and while she was grateful for Michael’s support and patience, she was also starting to feel a little bit suffocated. It seemed that it wasn’t only her career that had done a 180 degree turn.

She and Nikki finally finished with the press and Michael took her hand as they headed inside. Kristen spotted Kellan and Jackson but no, he wasn’t with them. It was impossible that he wasn’t here. This was a party. When would he ever turn down a party? Doubt began to knaw at her stomach and only Michael’s hand in hers stopped her from just turning to Nikki and asking where he was.

“I need a drink,” she said, turning to Michael. “Something strong.”

“You sure?”

She waved her arm, making a general gesture at the room filled with girls in tight, short dresses and still more photographers. “If I’m going to make it through the night, yes.”

He nodded. “I’ll be right back.”

He let go of her hand and walked to the bar and she almost immediately regretted it, feeling self-conscious in the crowd. A blonde from that MTV reality show smiled at her and looked like she was about to walk over and Kristen quickly walked away, not willing to be sucked into small talk and a photo op.

“Kristen! Hey Kristen!”

She inwardly groaned and turned around, coming face to face with…Taylor. She sighed with relief.

“Hi Taylor.”

“Cool party, huh?” He said, looking around in wide eyed excitement.

“Uh…Sure. Hey, have you seen Rob anywhere?”

“Yeah, over there,” he pointed to his left. “He was talking to Bruce Willis’ daughter. How cool is that?”

“Real cool,” she patted his arm absently. “See you around, Taylor.”

She walked in the direction Taylor pointed at, fuming silently. He was here and he had skipped the press line? How? Why? And how?

Sure enough he was with one of Bruce Willis’ daughters, Kristen couldn’t remember her name but she was sure that she was the underage one. In fact, Robert seemed to be surrounded by underage starlets and any other time she might have found this amusing but right now he was clearly drunk and enjoying the attention. And he skipped the press line.

As she neared them she could hear one of the girls talking about Edward Cullen and Kristen marched right over and grabbed Robert’s arm. “Sorry ladies, I have to borrow Edward Cullen for a minute.”

“Bella!” He exclaimed, grinning widely and wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Yes, definitely drunk.

They walked away as the girls giggled behind them, no doubt gossiping about Edward and Bella being together in real life or whatever.

“Thanks for getting me out of there, love.”

She raised an eyebrow. “You looked like you were having fun.”

“My ears are hurting. You notice how these young girls have really high pitched voices? And it gets higher when they laugh…”

Kristen laughed in spite of herself, forgetting that she was supposed to be mad at him.

“You have a very deep voice,” he said.

“Yeah, my man voice,” she rolled her eyes.

“I think it’s sexy.”

Kristen blushed and looked up, he was unexpectedly close and she realized that they had found a small niche that hid them from the party. Robert’s cheeks were slightly red, his eyes bright and dilated. He was drunk, she told herself. He didn’t know what he was saying.

“H-how did you skip the press line?”

“I was late so I came in back.”

Kristen’s jaw dropped. “That’s not fair!”

He grinned and brushed his thumb over her cheekbone. “If you hung out with me more then you’d know things like that.”

Her eyes involuntarily closed and she leaned into his touch. She had missed him. It seemed like the only times they saw each other these days were at these events.

“I’d hate to intrude on your quality time with your bimbos,” she said, a little more harshly than she meant to.

He chuckled and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“Kristen,” he whispered.

“What?”

“I want to…try something.”

And then his lips were on hers. She was so shocked that she couldn’t react but her body caught up before her brain did and her lips were moving beneath his, her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him in closer.

She had kissed Robert before but she’d never kissed him. Not like this, not out of character. And kissing him was…like being swept up in a hurricane. She felt dizzy and it was like her insides had been upended and rattled, moving to places where they shouldn’t be. His lips moved over hers urgently, his tongue caressed hers. Her back was pressed into the wall and she was dimly aware of the fact that her legs had come up to wrap around his waist.

And just when she thought that she couldn’t take anymore, that the speed and the wind would break and batter her…he slowed down. His kisses turned soft, his hands gently running up and down her sides. She was in the eye of the hurricane where everything was calm, quiet, and her body molded into his as if she were made for him.

It lasted too long and ended too soon. He pulled away from her and she gasped for air, realizing that her lungs were burning for it. Robert set her down on her feet and she righted her dress. It took a couple minutes and several mouthfuls of air before her brain processed what had happened.

Shitshitshitshitshit was her only thought.

She had cheated on Michael. She had cheated on Michael and liked it. She was a horrible person.

“Kristen…” Robert said cautiously, reading the panic in her eyes.

“I have to go,” she pushed past him and walked straight back into the crowd.

Now that Kristen had gotten her brain to function again, it began working in overtime, maybe making up for its abandonment of her. She had promised herself that she wouldn’t do this. Back on set when she could feel the tell tale signs of attraction, maybe a tiny crush, she had stomped on the feelings harshly. No good could come out of falling for your co-star. Especially when she already had a loving and devoted boyfriend. But Robert was Robert. He had his accent, his self-deprecating humor, his incredible talent, his way of listening to her in a way that no one else did, his way of hearing even the things she didn’t say. He was a tidal wave and it was impossible not to get pulled under.

She found Michael immediately, talking to Nikki and Kellan. Her gut clenched with guilt as she looked at him. She could only hope that he couldn’t read it on her face.

But he wrapped an arm around her and continued on with his conversation, oblivious to her inner distress. Kristen thought about that saying again, the pebble and the river. She realized that her life was that river.

A year ago her life felt settled, predictable and comfortable. She had steady work, she had her friends, her family, her boyfriend. Everything was in its proper place. She didn’t know what exactly the pebble was. Maybe it was that kiss, or Robert getting cast as Edward, or Catherine personally seeking her out in Pennsylvania to get her to audition for Bella. Maybe it was the damn book getting written at all. Whatever it was, the course of the river had changed.

Nikki waved to someone behind her and Kristen turned to see Robert, still looking slightly disheveled. Her heart fluttered and her stomach churned. He waved back but didn’t join their group, choosing to go to the bar instead.

Yes, the course had changed and Kristen now knew that it was useless to keep fighting the tide.
