As a concept, Wal Mart is brilliant. Think about it. It's a store that sells anything you need 24 hours. The other night I really needed a DVD at 12AM. Best Buy was closed, but Wal Mart wasn't. Sometimes you need a rake at 2AM, you never know. Sam Walton had a vision of a utopia I'm convinced. I can just hear him proposing his dream - "Think about ( Read more... )

I believe that was for the aborted attempt at a bamboo bar. And not aborted in the sense that they gave up on it, more in that the finished producted looked like an aborted fetus.

Well, I agree...Wal-Mart is convenient. And cheap - a plus for the poor college student. And a tad closer to UNC's campus than Target. But you should read Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich (might have misspelled that). It shows a different side of Wal-Mart and makes me feel guilty every time I shop there.

That book pissed me off. People aren't supposed to live on minimum wage, that's obvious. Crappy jobs like that are for high school students, they aren't designed to support an adult with bills and children. Those are entry level positions, designed for someone young, who would then move on to other better paying jobs. I work at a factory with people who did not go to college, and a few who did not graduate high school and they make 50 to 60,000 dollars a year. Those kind of jobs exist, however, there aren't enough for everyone. The fact is that not every single person can have a nice job and a good salary, that's just not how the world works. It sounds cold, but trying to find everyone a well paying job is like saying "I want every person's job to be above average." It's impossible.

also factory jobs are few and far between now, whereas when our grandparents were young you could 'pull yourself up by your own boot straps'. now people have a harder time getting out of their lower socio economic bracket because although more and more people go on to college, the increasing tuition costs make it even more difficult.

also a good salary is different from being able to live. and when you have a working group of people who still can't feed themselves or their children then your community is worse off and often those are the families that need/ask for financial assistance and social programming.

don't get me wrong though - nickle and dimed is slanted and has many flaws although it has good intentions.
